The Spanish Army is currently engaged in training approximately 50 Ukrainian soldiers in the planning and execution of military operations within urban environments. This training is taking place at the AlmerÃa military base, located in southern Spain, and is supported by the Rey Alfonso XIII Brigade.
Prior to the urban operations module, these Ukrainian troops underwent training that focused on shooting techniques with an array of weapon systems, alongside tactics and procedures relevant to conventional combat scenarios encountered in open field conditions. The comprehensive training program aims to enhance the efficacy and adaptability of the Ukrainian forces as they navigate the complexities of modern warfare.
During a recent visit to the AlmerÃa military base, Spanish Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles, expressed optimism regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, stating, “We hope that this year will mark the end of the war and Ukraine’s victory.” Robles underscored the notion that the Ukrainian struggle embodies the aspirations of all nations that hold freedom and peace in high regard, reiterating Spain’s unwavering support for Kyiv in this challenging time.
The training initiative forms part of the broader EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM UA), which has seen over 60,000 Ukrainian troops trained since its establishment in 2022. Since the onset of Russia’s invasion, the Spanish Army and Navy have trained more than 7,000 Ukrainian fighters, highlighting Spain’s significant contribution to the collective European effort to bolster Ukraine’s military capabilities.
As part of its strategic plan, the European Union announced intentions in December 2024 to train an additional 15,000 Ukrainian soldiers, aiming for completion by early this year. In order to support this extensive training mission, the European Council also extended funding for two additional years until November 2026, committing a budget of 409 million euros (approximately $429 million).
With 24 European nations participating in this initiative, the EUMAM UA continues to represent a concerted effort to assist Ukraine in navigating the challenges posed by ongoing hostilities. The upcoming training modules and the sustained support from European allies underscore the international commitment to Ukraine’s defense and the maintenance of peace and stability in the region.
