Turkey has taken a significant step to bolster its military capabilities with a recent contract signed with local automotive manufacturer BMC for the supply of Altuğ 8×8 armored combat vehicles. Under this agreement, BMC, based in İzmir, will deliver 29 hulls of the Altuğ system along with integrated logistics support services essential for the operational readiness of Turkey’s land forces.
Designed to enhance the Turkish military’s air and ground defense capabilities, each Altuğ platform in the contract is slated to come equipped with a 35-millimeter turret system. This initiative is part of Turkey’s broader effort to modernize its armed forces’ tactical vehicles, ensuring that they are well-equipped to handle contemporary threats. This contract follows a previous agreement awarded to the Turkish defense industry partner FNSS in February, which focused on supplying PARS Alpha armored platforms for similar modernization purposes.
The Altuğ vehicle itself is a versatile military asset, measuring 8 meters (26 feet) in length, and is available in both infantry fighting vehicle and armored personnel carrier variants. Its armament is robust, typically featuring a double-fed automatic gun, a grenade launcher, and support machine guns. The vehicle can be operated by a three-man crew while offering accommodation for up to nine troops, thereby making it an efficient personnel transporter in combat scenarios.
Notable features of the Altuğ’s hull include advanced protection against ballistic threats and landmines, along with a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) protection system. It is also equipped with fire extinguisher and explosion suppressor technologies, as well as warning and detection systems designed to identify enemy threats and weaponry.
Powering the Altuğ is a six-speed Allison transmission paired with a powerful 711-horsepower Caterpillar C13 engine. The vehicle boasts a maximum speed of 110 kilometers (68 miles) per hour and can operate over a range exceeding 800 kilometers (497 miles) on a single fuel tank. Additionally, the Altuğ has the capability to fording through water depths of up to 220 centimeters (87 inches) and can navigate vertical climbs of up to 60 centimeters (24 inches).
The Altuğ 8×8 armored combat vehicle represents a critical asset in enhancing the operational capabilities of the Turkish military, reflecting a continued commitment to developing indigenous defense solutions and advancing overall military readiness.
