The Maldives has recently showcased its new Ajban 4×4 light armored vehicles during a ceremonial event celebrating the military’s 133rd anniversary in Malé. This presentation marked the first public display of the Ajban systems, specifically the 442A variant, which is engineered for a range of military functions including observation, command, and communication.
The procurement of these vehicles had not been previously announced, but it has now been confirmed by the EDGE Group, a state-owned entity from Abu Dhabi. This acquisition is part of the broader cooperation between the United Arab Emirates and the Maldives, emphasizing the UAE’s role as a strategic defense partner for the South Asian nation. The development and supply of the Ajban technology have been entrusted to NIMR Automotive, a subsidiary of EDGE Group.
In a statement, the EDGE Group highlighted their commitment to enhancing regional security by stating, “As a strategic defence partner to the Maldives, we have delivered high-mobility AJBAN 442A vehicles to the Maldives National Defence Force, reinforcing our ongoing commitment to supporting our partners across the region with mission-ready solutions.”
The specifications of the Ajban 442A are impressive. The vehicle measures approximately 6 meters (20 feet) in length and can accommodate a crew of five, along with a payload capacity of up to 4,000 kilograms (8,818 pounds). Safety features include ballistic and blast armor, in addition to a V-hull design that provides protection against mine blast impacts. For combat scenarios, the vehicle is equipped with a roof-mounted self-defense weapon.
The Ajban 442A’s performance capabilities are robust, powered by a six-speed automatic transmission and a water-cooled turbocharged diesel engine generating around 360 horsepower. It can achieve a top speed of 110 kilometers (68 miles) per hour, with an operational range of 700 kilometers (435 miles).
In addition to the 442A variant, the EDGE Group also offers alternative configurations such as the 432AU for logistics and utility uses, and the 452A, which is designed for artillery support, internal security, medical transport, and troop movement. This versatility underscores the Ajban’s role in fulfilling diverse operational needs within military frameworks.
