A recent confrontation at a government office has sent ripples through social media, eliciting strong reactions, particularly from military veterans and defense supporters. The incident reportedly involved Colonel Ankush Chaudhary, the Commanding Officer of an engineer regiment, who was allegedly assaulted by Assistant Defence Estate Officer (ADEO) Triyam Singh.
The conflict emerged amid Colonel Chaudhary’s critical oversight of a fencing project along the Line of Control (LoC), a key initiative in response to a recent infiltration attack in Pahalgam. In seeking necessary approvals for the project, Colonel Chaudhary approached ADEO Singh, only to face a refusal on signing crucial land-use documentation. This drove the Colonel to visit Singh’s office in hopes of resolving the issue directly.
Reports indicate that what began as a routine discussion escalated into a hostile exchange, culminating in an alleged assault on Colonel Chaudhary. Following the incident, soldiers from the Colonel’s engineer regiment rallied in defense of their leader, resulting in a confrontation with the ADEO.
The fallout has sparked a broader conversation about the role of civil officials in defense land matters, particularly the challenges faced by military personnel in executing urgent infrastructure projects. The situation has garnered the attention of veterans and currently serving personnel, many of whom expressed solidarity with Colonel Chaudhary. Former Northern Army Commander Lt Gen (Retd) KJS Dhillon emphasized the deep bond of loyalty between officers and their troops, stating that a commanding officer holds a revered status among soldiers.
The issue gained traction on social media, with retired Army officer Sushil Singh Sheoran publicly criticizing the Defence Estate Office (DEO) for alleged corruption and obstructing critical projects in exchange for bribes. Sheoran’s remarks on the platform X highlighted ongoing frustrations within the military regarding civilian oversight and bureaucratic delays affecting national security efforts.
As of now, the Ministry of Defence has yet to release an official statement on the incident. However, the altercation has intensified calls for immediate reforms within the Defence Estate management system, as well as advocating for improved civil-military relations in operationally sensitive regions.
