Indian Army to Adopt 33 Niche Technologies by 2030 for Modernization Efforts

The Army Training Command (ARTRAC) is set to implement 33 niche technologies by the year 2030 as a strategic move to modernize training and enhance the Indian Army’s preparedness for future combat scenarios. This announcement came from Lieutenant General Devendra Sharma during the ARTRAC Investiture Ceremony 2025 held in Shimla.

In his address, Lt Gen Sharma underscored the significance of advanced technologies, particularly drones, in contemporary warfare. To bolster this initiative, 15 major training establishments will be developed as Centres of Expertise. As part of its ongoing commitment to enhancing capabilities, ARTRAC has already trained around 18,000 personnel on 22 niche technologies during the 2024-25 training cycle. The command aims to train an additional 12,000 troops on 21 technologies in the upcoming 2025-26 cycle.

To support these advancements, ARTRAC has allocated ₹390 crore over the next five years. This funding will focus on research and development, enhancing infrastructure, and upgrading curricula to seamlessly integrate cutting-edge systems into operational doctrines. Key areas of emphasis will include specialized innovations in artificial intelligence, robotics, unmanned systems, and cybersecurity, highlighting the strategic importance of these fields.

Lt Gen Sharma also brought attention to the increasing representation of women in the Indian Army, with more than 1,800 women now serving across various ranks, including command positions. This shift reflects a broader commitment to inclusivity and diversity within the armed forces.

During the ceremony, three Category ‘A’ establishments and two affiliated units received the prestigious GOC-in-C Army Training Command Unit Citation for their remarkable contributions during the 2023-24 training year. The Military College of Material Management (Jabalpur), the Counter Insurgency Jungle Warfare School (Variengate), and the Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (Secunderabad) were recognized for their Financial Excellence Awards, demonstrating exceptional financial management practices.

Furthermore, the Armoured Corps Centre & School (Ahilyanagar) and the MCMM (Jabalpur) were commended with e-Office Excellence Awards for their initiatives in advancing digital workflows and minimizing the reliance on paper documentation. These recognitions highlight ARTRAC’s commitment to efficiency and modernization across all levels of training and operational planning.
