‘Maratha Military Landscapes of India’ on the UNESCO World Heritage List
- The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has expressed immense pride and joy over the inclusion of the Maratha Military Landscapes of India in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List.
- He noted that the inscribed heritage comprises 12 majestic forts- 11 located in Maharashtra and 1 in Tamil Nadu.
- The inscription recognises a strategic defence network developed between the 17th and 19th centuries across present-day Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
- The proposal was sent to the consideration of World Heritage Committee in January 2024 and after a rigorous eighteen-month long process involving several technical meetings with the advisory bodies and visit of International Council on Monuments and Sites mission to review the sites, this historic decision was taken by the members of the World Heritage Committee last evening at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris.
Three senior members killed in Indian strikes: Ulfa; Army denies Op
- Precision strikes were carried out on United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) camps in Myanmar, targeting the terrorist outfit’s senior leadership sheltering across the border to stay out of the reach of Indian armed forces.
- Sources said pinpointed attacks were carried out and loitering munitions and drones were used to take down high-value targets. They added the attacks were carried out from a standoff distance.
- “There are no inputs with the Indian Army on such an operation,” defence ministry PRO Lt Col Mahendra Rawat.
- Ulfa-I contested the statement, specifying that three drone attacks took place in the span of two hours. The outfit said residents of the border belt in Arunachal Pradesh would testify to the attacks.

‘Skynex’, Ukraine’s new ‘Made in Germany’ drone
- Ukraine has released videos of its new drone killers, the German-made Skynex air defense systems, which are proving crucial in intercepting Russian Shahed drones.
- Rheinmetall-developed Skynex short-range air defense (SHORAD) system has been consistently effective in neutralizing incoming UAVs.
- Reportedly on the night of July 11–12, Ukrainian air defense units downed 319 Shahed drones and 25 cruise missiles. The newly released video shows Skynex in action, intercepting at least seven drones with rapid precision.
- Introduced in 2021 by German defense giant Rheinmetall, Skynex is specifically designed to counter drones, cruise missiles, and precision-guided threats. In Ukraine, it’s deployed to defend key infrastructure, such as airfields and critical facilities.
- At the heart of Skynex is the Oerlikon Mk3 — a 35mm automatic cannon that can fire up to 1,000 rounds per minute, with an effective range of 4 kilometers.
US Will Send Ukraine Patriot
- President Donald Trump said the United States would send Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine to help it fight off a Russian invasion, as his relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin soured.
- “I haven’t agreed on the number yet, but they’re going to have some because they do need protection,” he told reporters.
- The MIM-104 Patriot is a mobile interceptor missile surface-to-air missile (SAM) system, the primary such system used by the United States Army and several allied states.
- It is manufactured by the U.S. defense contractor Raytheon and derives its name from the radar component of the weapon system.
Indian Army’s ATAGS To Get Range Over 80 Km
- The Indian Army is on the verge of a significant leap in artillery capability with the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), developed indigenously by the DRDO in collaboration with TATA Advanced Systems and Bharat Forge.
- Currently, the ATAGS boasts a proven range of up to 48 km with conventional ammunition, positioning it among the most advanced artillery systems globally in terms of range, automation, and precision.
- Transformative leap will come with precision-guided munitions and ramjet-powered shells.
- The precision-guided variants will employ NavIC satellite guidance (with GPS backup) and are expected to be available within four to five years, with prototypes anticipated by 2027.
- Over 80% of its components are domestically sourced, underscoring India’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
