Indian Army Reviews Veteran Support Initiatives Under Lt Gen Pratik Sharma

In a significant initiative to boost the welfare of ex-servicemen (ESM), Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, serving as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Indian Army’s Northern Command, led a comprehensive review meeting aimed at enhancing support for veterans in the region. The virtual meeting brought together key stakeholders and regional representatives to assess ongoing welfare programs and brainstorm innovative strategies to better serve India’s increasing veteran population.

Having assumed command in April 2025, Lt Gen Sharma’s extensive military background, spanning over 37 years and including service with the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) as well as a tenure as Director General of Military Operations, reinforces his commitment to veterans. During the meeting, he emphasized the Indian Army’s dedication to its retired personnel and urged officials to uphold the principle of “Nation First.” He highlighted the importance of ensuring dignity, well-being, and a smooth transition to civilian life for retired service members and their families.

The discussions addressed several critical aspects of veteran support, including resettlement schemes, educational opportunities, and resources for war widows and dependents. A particular focus was placed on the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), where persistent issues such as hospital empanelment and timely reimbursement were examined. These challenges impact thousands of veterans every year, underscoring the need for systematic improvements in healthcare services.

Currently, the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare operates numerous programs for over 3 million veterans, backed by an annual budget of approximately ₹12,000 crore. The Northern Command, established in 1908 during the British Indian Army era, oversees four operational corps and plays a crucial role in both national defense and outreach efforts to veterans in states such as Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.

This latest review reflects the evolving function of the Indian Army, which is increasingly seen not just as a combat force, but also as a community institution dedicated to the long-term welfare of its service members. Under Lt Gen Sharma’s guidance, the Northern Command is poised to introduce several veteran-friendly initiatives in the coming months, highlighting a proactive approach to addressing the needs of those who have served the nation.
