Indian Army Receives First Batch of AH-64E Apache Helicopters from the US

The Indian Army has officially welcomed its first batch of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, a move that significantly boosts its aviation capabilities and strategic operations. These advanced helicopters, which faced a 15-month delay in delivery, are set to be stationed in Jodhpur, positioned to enhance the Army’s strike potential in the region.

In a notable announcement made via X (formerly Twitter), the Indian Army celebrated this delivery, stating, “Indian Army inducts #Apache. Milestone moment for Indian Army as the first batch of Apache helicopters for Army Aviation arrive today in India. These state-of-the-art platforms will bolster the operational capabilities of the #IndianArmy significantly.”

The induction of the AH-64E Apache helicopters follows a substantial $600 million deal that was finalized in 2020, securing six new units for the Indian Army. This addition comes on the heels of an earlier procurement of 22 Apache helicopters for the Indian Air Force completed in 2015. The urgency around the delivery was highlighted when Defence Minister Rajnath Singh advocated for expedited shipments during discussions with US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth concerning both the Apache helicopters and GE F404 engines to support the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas.

Manufactured by Boeing, the AH-64E Apache is recognized as one of the most sophisticated attack helicopters in operation worldwide. It is already in use by several military forces, including those of the US, UK, and Israel. The Apache is designed with cutting-edge capabilities, featuring a 30 mm chain gun, laser- and radar-guided Hellfire missiles, and rocket pods. Its advanced Longbow radar system further equips it for effective target detection and engagement, greatly reducing the helicopter’s exposure to enemy fire.

The arrival of these helicopters marks a pivotal enhancement in the Indian Army’s operational framework, signaling a commitment to modernizing military inventory and improving defense readiness amidst evolving regional security dynamics.
