Lieutenant General Manoj Kumar Katiyar, PVSM, AVSM, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Indian Army’s Western Command, recently conducted an extensive review of operational preparedness at Tibri Military Station, a strategic location near the India-Pakistan border. Tibri serves as a vital training and deployment hub for the elite Panther Division, which plays a significant role in defending India’s western frontiers.
The review underscored the Indian Army’s unwavering commitment to maintain readiness in strategically sensitive areas. Lt Gen Katiyar commended the troops for their professionalism and high morale, emphasizing their capability to undertake missions in challenging and rugged terrains filled with obstacles. The Western Command, which is based in Chandimandir, oversees crucial areas such as Punjab, Haryana, and parts of Rajasthan. This command has been instrumental in shaping India’s defensive strategy since its establishment in 1947, particularly concerning the security of Jammu and Kashmir.
During this visit to Tibri, a soldier was awarded a medal in recognition of exemplary service, further highlighting the Army’s longstanding tradition of honoring gallantry and dedication among its ranks. Lt Gen Katiyar, who assumed command in July 2023, has over 37 years of military experience, serving in various terrains and conflict zones. His previous assignments include significant roles along the Line of Control and the Line of Actual Control. He is a distinguished alumnus of both the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy.
Military experts indicate that such operational reviews are vital for sustaining a robust defense posture. A study by the RAND Corporation emphasized the necessity of regular field evaluations and terrain-specific training to enhance combat efficiency. In alignment with this principle, the inspection initiatives undertaken by the Western Command are critical for boosting India’s strategic readiness in the face of ongoing security challenges along its western borders.
