First Training Squadron of Indian Navy in Seychelles

  • The ships of the First Training Squadron (1TS) of the Indian Navy — INS Tir, INS Shardul, and CGS Sarathi — have arrived at Port Victoria, Seychelles, as part of a long-range training deployment in the south-west Indian Ocean Region.
  • The deployment of 1TS is the third port call of the Indian Navy ships to Seychelles in 2025, a Navy spokesperson said.
  • Building “bridges of friendship” while training young minds, the ships of the 1TS arrived at Port Victoria on September 1. And 1TS is presently on long-range training deployment in the south-west Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
  • This highlights the Indian Navy’s robust bilateral engagement and maritime partnership aligned with the broader vision of MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) in the IOR.

India Eyes More S-400s As Last Delivery Due Next Year

  • India is negotiating terms and conditions for purchasing additional S-400 surface-to-air missile systems from Russia after the latter delivers the remaining two out of the five air defence systems by 2026 as per the bilateral contract.
  • Dmitry Shugayev, director, Russian Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, on Tuesday said, “As is known, India has our S-400 system. There is an opportunity to expand cooperation in this sector as well. It means new supplies. So far, we are negotiating this.”
  • Shugayev added that the supply of Sukhoi-57 fighter jets is another area of defence cooperation between the two countries.
  • His remarks come after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China, on Monday. The two leaders’ joint arrival at the venue in Putin’s car was viewed as a signal to US President Donald Trump, who recently imposed 50 per cent tariffs on Indian goods. Half of those tariffs, which took effect on August 27, target India over its continued purchase of Russian oil, despite the Ukraine war.
  • In October 2018, India signed a $5.4 billion agreement with Russia to procure the S-400 Triumf – a long-range surface-to-air missile system.
  • The S-400 systems, along with India’s indigenous air defence network, played a pivotal role during the India–Pakistan conflict in May by intercepting and neutralising missiles and drones launched from across the border.
  • Meanwhile, the BrahMos — a supersonic cruise missile jointly developed by India and Russia — was deployed by the Indian Air Force to strike multiple Pakistani airbases. The precision strikes forced Islamabad to seek a ceasefire, which was subsequently accepted.

New Ordnance company Hit Record Rs 3,500 Crore Export

  • The seven new companies carved out of the erstwhile Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) have hit a new record export high of ₹3,545 crore as well as healthy profitability, in a significant turnaround from four years ago when they underwent a landmark corporatisation process.
  • Prior to the reforms, the factories were struggling and had a net loss of ₹2,844 crore, with little money available for research and development or exploration of foreign markets. However, the latest financial figures show that in FY25, the factories have recorded a net profit of ₹1,625 crore.
  • The Directorate of Ordnance (Coordination & Services) is an authority under the Department of Defence Production of Ministry of Defence, Government of India. Its primary work is to management, give instructions and make coordination of government ordnance production public companies.

CONS Visits National Maritime Heritage

  • Adm Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, visited the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal, Gujarat, on 03 Sep 2025.
  • The visit included a comprehensive tour of the NMHC, a visit to key naval exhibits and heritage artefacts, a review of construction progress, interaction with project stakeholders, and a visit to the Varuna Naval Complex.
  • The NMHC at Lothal is a landmark project being developed by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, with the support of the Government of Gujarat and the contribution of the Indian Navy. Spread over 400 acres, it will be one of the largest maritime museums in the world.
  • The project aims to showcase India’s rich seafaring legacy and its naval evolution, with immersive galleries including one dedicated to the evolution of the Indian Navy.
