Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) has recently received its second Bombardier Global 6500 business jet, marking a significant step forward in the development of the US Army’s High Accuracy Detection and Exploitation System (HADES) aircraft. This program aims to provide the military with advanced long-range platforms that surpass the speed and operational ceiling of current intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance aircraft.
The newly delivered aircraft arrived at SNC’s facility in Maryland, where it will undergo outfitting with an array of specialized systems tailored for its intended role. The HADES fleet is designed to bolster the Army’s capability to track sophisticated threats and facilitate quick deployment on a global scale, thereby enhancing overall US situational awareness.
In August 2024, SNC was designated the lead systems integrator for the 12-year HADES program. This role involves the modification of multiple Bombardier Global 6500 jets using open-architecture systems, cutting-edge artificial intelligence, and modular designs. These enhancements are expected to significantly improve data processing capabilities and allow for swift adjustments to mission parameters.
While the initial plan entailed the acquisition of up to 12 aircraft, recent reviews under the Army’s ongoing efficiency and lethality initiative indicate that this number might be decreased to six. The first Global 6500 was delivered in November 2024, with projections suggesting that the aircraft will be operational by late 2026 or early 2027.
The Bombardier Global 6500 boasts an impressive range of over 12,000 kilometers (7,456 miles) and can comfortably accommodate up to 17 passengers. It is powered by advanced Rolls-Royce Pearl engines, achieving a top speed of Mach 0.9 and operating at altitudes exceeding 15,500 meters (50,853 feet). The aircraft measures 30 meters (98 feet) in length and features a wingspan of 29 meters (95 feet). With a basic operating weight of around 23,600 kilograms (52,029 pounds), it can carry a maximum payload of about 2,600 kilograms (5,732 pounds).
Additionally, the Global 6500 is equipped with the Bombardier Vision flight deck, which includes four large displays, a combined vision system, a head-up display, graphical flight planning, an airport moving map, and weather radar capabilities. It is also designed for compatibility with GPS-dependent signals, satellite communications, and performance-based navigation standards, solidifying its role as a modern and versatile platform for the US Army.
