In a tragic incident that has cast a shadow over the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun, a cadet lost his life during a scheduled swimming exercise on Wednesday evening. The deceased has been identified as S. Balu, 33, hailing from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He entered the esteemed institution through the Army Cadet College (ACC) route, which serves as a pathway for active soldiers in the Army, Navy, and Air Force seeking to become commissioned officers.
Eyewitness accounts and police sources reveal that Balu was found unconscious in the swimming pool during the training session. Despite immediate efforts to rescue him and transport him to a nearby hospital, medical professionals pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Subsequent to the incident, officials from the IMA reported the occurrence to local authorities, leading to the registration of a case at the Dehradun Cantonment Police Station. A post-mortem examination was conducted on Thursday, after which Balu’s remains were returned to the IMA for further protocols.
In response to this alarming event, the IMA has initiated an internal inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Law enforcement officials have indicated that the precise cause of death will be determined upon receipt of the post-mortem findings.

In 2017, two Gentleman Cadets tragically collapsed and died during a demanding 10 km endurance run. A year later, another cadet lost his life after slipping into a gorge while participating in night navigation training exercises.
