In a tragic escalation of violence in the northeast region, Rifleman Ranjit Singh Kashyap of the Assam Rifles lost his life during a militant ambush on September 19, 2025. This attack took place near Nambol Sabal Leikai in the Bishnupur district, where insurgents targeted a convoy as it returned from a medical relief camp. The ambush resulted in the deaths of two military personnel, with five others sustaining injuries.

Rifleman Kashyap, originally from Bastar in Chhattisgarh, was serving with the 33 Assam Rifles unit at the time of the attack. The convoy, traveling in a Tata 407 vehicle from Patsoi to Nambol, was ambushed by suspected terrorists, igniting a fierce firefight that ultimately claimed his life along with that of Naib Subedar Shyam Gurung. The injured soldiers were quickly evacuated to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal for urgent medical care.

In the aftermath of the ambush, authorities have made strides towards justice. Manipur Police apprehended two suspects and seized a silver-blue van thought to have been utilized in the attack, which was recovered from Mutum Yangbi. Security forces have since ramped up operations in nearby areas, such as Shantipur and Ishok, to capture those responsible for the ambush and to prevent further violence.

Tributes to Rifleman Kashyap have been pouring in from across the nation, with a wreath-laying ceremony held in Raipur by troops from the Chhattisgarh and Odisha Sub Area in recognition of his bravery and selfless service. The Indian Army’s Central Command highlighted that this event underlines the unyielding courage displayed by its personnel and serves as a poignant reminder of the daily risks taken in the line of duty. Similar honors were also paid in Manipur, reflecting a nation united in gratitude for his commitment and sacrifice.

This incident is part of a broader trend of heightened tensions and violence in the region, with ongoing reports of attacks targeting security forces. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation in an effort to maintain stability and ensure justice for the fallen heroes who protect the nation.
