Tejas Fighter Jet Crash at Dubai Air Show
A tragic incident occurred during an aerial demonstration at the Dubai Air Show when an Indian Air Force (IAF) Tejas Light Combat Aircraft crashed, leading to the death of Wing Commander Namansh Syal. HAL, the state-owned aerospace manufacturer responsible for the Tejas programme, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the pilot.
This was the second crash involving a Tejas aircraft in less than two years, the previous accident having taken place in Jaisalmer in 2023, where the pilot had managed to eject safely. The Tejas project, which began in the mid-1980s, achieved flight clearance in 2011, and the first operational variant was inducted into the IAF in 2016. India has since advanced the programme significantly, with major procurement orders—83 Tejas Mk-1A jets contracted in 2021 and preliminary approval for an additional 97 aircraft in 2023.
India–Russia Talks on Joint Production of Su-57
India and Russia are engaged in detailed discussions to jointly manufacture the fifth-generation Su-57 fighter jet. The collaboration aims to cover advanced domains such as low-signature technology, AESA radar, modern weapons, AI-enabled avionics, optics, and engine technology.
The proposal includes the development of a two-seat Su-57 variant and the transfer of critical technologies, enabling India to produce key components domestically. This partnership is poised to deepen long-standing defence ties and reduce India’s vulnerability to global sanctions, while offering the potential for long-term upgrades and future expansion.
IAF Inducts Leased Boeing KC-135 Refueller
To revive its diminished aerial refuelling capacity, the Indian Air Force has inducted a leased Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker. The aircraft, stationed at Agra Air Force Station, arrives under a wet-lease agreement that includes crew support and maintenance oversight by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.
The KC-135 will enhance joint operations with the Indian Navy and serve as a critical asset amid the low fleet availability of the Russian-origin IL-78MKI tankers, which have suffered from chronic serviceability issues. India has pursued new refuelling aircraft since 2007, with global options such as the A330 MRTT and KC-46 Pegasus considered in the past. The interoperability of the KC-135 with NATO-standard aircraft also boosts India’s operational exposure to global best practices.
CISF Designated as Main Security Organisation for Indian Seaports
In a major move to reinforce maritime security, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has been designated as the Recognised Security Organisation for nearly 250 seaport facilities across India. The appointment, made by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, aligns with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.
The plan anticipates a major increase in manpower, with an estimated requirement of nearly 80,000 CISF personnel in the coming years to secure key port installations. At present, the force has around 5,300 personnel stationed at various ports. This upgrade aims to implement a strong technology-driven security system across coastal infrastructure within six months.
DRDO’s SWOTH Radar Achieves Successful Testing
India’s surveillance capabilities received a major boost with the successful site testing of DRDO’s Surface Wave Over-The-Horizon Radar (SWOTH-Radar). The system uses high-frequency surface wave propagation to detect maritime and low-altitude aerial threats far beyond conventional radar limits.
Capable of monitoring targets up to 500 km away, the SWOTH radar enhances India’s maritime domain awareness, especially in the Indian Ocean Region. Its all-weather reliability and resilience against electronic warfare make it a vital strategic asset for long-range coastal monitoring and defence.
