National Pollution Control Day 2025
National Pollution Control Day is observed every year on 2 December to remember the lives lost in the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy, one of the world’s worst industrial disasters. The day not only commemorates the victims of the tragedy—caused by the leakage of toxic methyl isocyanate gas from the Union Carbide plant—but also stresses the importance of preventing environmental hazards through stricter safety protocols.
The theme for 2025, “Sustainable Living for a Greener Future,” highlights the urgent need for environmentally responsible habits at both individual and governmental levels.
People are encouraged to adopt eco-friendly practices such as reducing single-use plastics, conserving water and energy, opting for public transport or cycling, ensuring proper waste segregation, and planting trees. The observance serves as a reminder that pollution control is essential for public health, climate protection, and sustainable development.
Air Marshal Tejbir Singh Appointed DG (Inspection & Safety)
On 1 December 2025, Air Marshal Tejbir Singh took charge as the Director General (Inspection and Safety) at Air Headquarters, marking a significant step in his distinguished 37-year career in the Indian Air Force (IAF).
Throughout his service, he has held multiple leadership and strategic roles, including Air Attaché to Bangladesh, Senior Directing Staff at the National Defence College, and Assistant Chief of Air Staff Operations (Transport & Helicopters). His wide-ranging experience makes him well suited to oversee operational inspection and safety standards across the IAF.
Sanchar Saathi App Made Mandatory on All Smartphones
In a major push to strengthen digital security, the Government of India has directed all smartphone manufacturers to pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app on every new device sold in the country. Additionally, older phones must receive the app through software updates. Importantly, users will not be able to remove or disable the app.
Companies are required to ensure compliance within 90 days and file status reports within 120 days.
This step is aimed at combating rising telecom cybercrimes, including fraudulent mobile connections, fake IMEI numbers, and device-related fraud. The Sanchar Saathi platform offers several critical services, such as:
- Blocking lost or stolen phones
- Verifying IMEI authenticity
- Checking the number of mobile connections linked to a user’s ID
- Reporting suspicious activity to help law enforcement
The initiative aligns with the government’s efforts to enhance user safety and improve national telecom security.
UNFPA India Felicitates IUSSP for the 2025 United Nations Population Award
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) India honored the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) for receiving the 2025 United Nations Population Award in the Institutional Category. The recognition celebrates IUSSP’s remarkable contributions to global population research and its role in encouraging evidence-based policymaking.
The felicitation took place during the 46th Annual Conference of the Indian Association for the Study of Population (IASP), themed “People, Planet, Prosperity: Demographic Drivers of India’s Inclusive Growth.”
Under the leadership of Dr. Shireen Jejeebhoy, IUSSP has played a vital role in strengthening demographic research networks and promoting collaboration among population scientists worldwide.
IGI Airport Declared India’s First Water-Positive Airport
Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has achieved the distinction of being India’s first water-positive airport among facilities with annual traffic exceeding 40 million passengers. This certification reflects the airport’s ability to replenish more water than it consumes, contributing significantly to sustainable airport management.
IGI Airport reached this milestone by:
- Constructing 625 rainwater harvesting structures
- Developing two underground reservoirs with a combined capacity of 9 million litres
- Operating a state-of-the-art 16.6 MLD zero-liquid-discharge sewage treatment plant
The recognition was awarded at the Water Innovation Summit 2025, under the NITI Aayog–CII water neutrality initiative, demonstrating the airport’s strong commitment to environmental stewardship.
