Weighing in at 250 pounds (113 kilograms), this precision munition employs satellite guidance to engage targets effectively. Its design features extendable wings that enable the bomb to hit targets situated over 60 miles (96 kilometers) away, allowing aircraft to carry more munitions and conduct airstrikes with higher efficiency. Since its introduction in 2006, the GBU-39 has led to a paradigm shift in aerial warfare, trading size for accuracy and effectiveness.

The GBU-39 comes in three main variants. The GBU-39/B is the baseline model and is GPS/INS-guided with a penetrating blast-fragmentation warhead. In terms of functionality, the GBU-39 distinguishes itself by integrating its guidance hardware directly into the bomb during production, rather than relying on bolt-on kits. As a result, target coordinates can be uploaded while still mounted to the aircraft. Following release, the onboard guidance system accurately steers the bomb to its intended target while employing anti-jamming techniques to counter adversarial attempts to disrupt GPS signals.

Nonetheless, despite its advantages, the GBU-39 does have limitations, including a relatively limited explosive power that may prove insufficient against deeply buried or heavily reinforced structures. Additionally, its reliance on GPS guidance makes it vulnerable to electronic warfare tactics. Designed primarily for permissive airspace, the munition is not optimized for environments with advanced air defenses, prompting the development of newer models like the GBU-53/B Small Diameter Bomb II, which features enhanced capabilities for challenging conditions.

The ongoing relevance of the GBU-39 can be attributed to its unique blend of precision, efficiency, and flexibility. Its smaller size allows for a greater number of munitions to be carried into battle, which is critical during counterinsurgency operations where minimizing civilian casualties is essential. Compared to newer smart weapons, the GBU-39 is also more cost-effective, enabling militaries to maintain high operational tempo while optimizing resource allocation. The bomb’s proficiency in striking high-value and fortified targets with minimal collateral fallout aligns well with modern military objectives that emphasize precision and precision strikes in civilian-populated zones.
