The Swedish and Finnish armed forces have announced a joint procurement of over 300 additional Sisu GTP 4×4 off-road vehicles, marking a significant step in enhancing their military capabilities. This procurement, valued at approximately 2 billion Swedish krona (around $211 million), raises the total number of Sisu vehicles ordered by the two nations to more than 600. Among the various models included in this order are specialized versions such as single-cab, air-defense, command, medical, and models designed for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) detection.
The delivery schedule for these additional vehicles aligns with that of the previous order, bolstered by increased production capacity from the manufacturer. Deliveries to the Swedish Armed Forces are slated to commence between 2026 and 2028.
Caroline Viberg, Head of the Wheeled Vehicle Unit at the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, emphasized the importance of this collaboration with Finland. She noted, “We have just started delivering the previous order to the Armed Forces and the cooperation with Finland is a success factor in that.” Viberg highlighted that this new order signifies a crucial enhancement in military capability.
The Sisu GTP 4×4 is designed as a multi-purpose armored vehicle, optimized for harsh off-road conditions across various environments, including mud, snow, and rugged terrain. Its independent suspension system allows for effective navigation over challenging obstacles. Notably, the vehicle comes equipped with differential locks on each axle, improving both traction and control in difficult conditions.
The versatile design of the Sisu GTP 4×4 includes the option to add features such as a winch, traction chains, and a Central Tire Inflation System, which enables adjustments to tire pressure based on terrain, thereby enhancing off-road mobility. The vehicle boasts a ground clearance of 0.4 meters (1.31 feet), a notable approach angle of 45 degrees, and the capacity to tackle gradients reaching up to 60 percent.
Powered by a robust Mercedes-Benz OM926 six-cylinder, four-stroke diesel engine, the Sisu GTP 4×4 achieves a commendable power-to-weight ratio, ensuring superior performance in the field. Its modular design supports task-specific protection, adhering to STANAG 4569 standards for mine and ballistic armor. Additionally, the vehicle can be outfitted with add-on kits for increased defense, including protection against CBRN threats.
This substantial investment reflects the commitment of both Sweden and Finland to bolster their military resources and operational readiness in a rapidly changing security environment.
