NATO Contracts NHIndustries for Three NH90 Helicopters for Dutch Air Force

In a significant development for military aviation, NATO’s Helicopter Management Agency (NAHEMA) has finalized a contract with NHIndustries to deliver three NH90 NATO Frigate Helicopters (NFH) for the Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force. This agreement, executed on behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Defence, not only secures the immediate acquisition of these aircraft but also includes an option for two additional units, potentially bringing the Dutch maritime rotary-wing fleet to a total of 22 helicopters.

The assembly of the three new airframes will take place at NHIndustries’ parent company, Leonardo, in Italy. These helicopters will feature the Block 1/Software Release 3 (SWR3) configuration, which encompasses a range of advanced technologies. Among the enhancements are modern avionics, including the Data Link 22 tactical communication system designed for beyond-line-of-sight operations, a state-of-the-art electro-optical system, an upgraded acoustic suite, and broadened weapons integration capabilities.

The Netherlands is also poised to modernize its existing NH90 fleet to align with this advanced standard. By creating a common configuration, the initiative aims to increase aircraft availability, simplify maintenance and training protocols, and ensure interoperability with both European and NATO partners.

The delivery of the new NH90 NFH helicopters is anticipated around 2030, as indicated by various sources close to the matter. This acquisition underscores the Netherlands’ longstanding commitment to the NH90 program, which it joined as a founding nation in 1999. Over the years, the NH90 has demonstrated exceptional operational capabilities, becoming an essential asset for the Dutch military. Notably, the aircraft made its operational debut in 2013 during counter-piracy missions off the Somali coast.

Col. Dominique Troquete highlighted the significance of the NH90, emphasizing its role as a weapon system with unmatched operational capabilities. NHIndustries President Axel Aloccio reiterated this sentiment, stating that the recent order reflects ongoing confidence in the multinational helicopter initiative. Meanwhile, NAHEMA General Manager Michael Kohlhaas framed the acquisition as a crucial long-term investment, enhancing both operational readiness and industrial cooperation among member nations.
