International Day of Epidemic Preparedness

The International Day of Epidemic Preparedness is observed every year on 27 December to emphasize the global importance of preventing, preparing for, and effectively responding to disease outbreaks. The day serves as a reminder that epidemics pose serious threats not only to human health but also to economies and social stability.

This observance highlights the need for strong public health systems, early detection and warning mechanisms, scientific research, and coordinated international action. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed this day through a resolution, and it was observed for the first time on 27 December 2020.

An epidemic refers to the sudden and rapid spread of a disease affecting a large population within a specific area. If timely measures are not taken, such outbreaks can escalate into regional or global crises, as witnessed during Ebola, SARS, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The day reinforces global commitment toward health preparedness and resilience.
