Lithuania has secured a significant advancement in its air defense capabilities with a recent agreement worth 3 billion Swedish krona (approximately $326 million) for the continued supply of Bolide missiles, deployed via the RBS 70 NG launcher. This procurement is part of a broader framework agreement involving Saab, Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration, and Lithuania’s Ministry of Defence.
The deliveries of the additional Bolide short-range air defense missiles are scheduled to take place between 2028 and 2032. Görgen Johansson, head of Saab’s Dynamics business area, emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing Lithuania’s military capabilities, stating, “With this order, we continue our commitment to supporting the Lithuanian Armed Forces with our world-leading RBS 70 missiles. These form a key part of the nation’s air defence capability and contribute to keeping Lithuania’s airspace safe.”
Since 2004, the Lithuanian Armed Forces have been utilizing the RBS 70 short-range man-portable air defense system to engage low-flying enemy aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles. The initial system deployed includes Mk 1 and Mk 2 missiles; however, the newer RBS 70 NG variant, which incorporates the Bolide missile, is noted for its enhanced speed, range, and lethality.
The recent order follows Lithuania’s acquisition of Bolide missiles under a $2.2 million contract established in May 2025, as well as another package valued at $16 million in May 2024. Furthermore, in December, Lithuania ordered a Mobile Short Range Air Defense (MSHORAD) system from Saab that integrates the RBS 70 NG missile with the Giraffe 1X radar. This system will be mounted on JLTV 4×4 vehicles, offering increased mobility and protection against aerial threats.
The Bolide missile boasts impressive specifications, including a maximum speed of Mach 2 and an engagement range extending from a few hundred meters up to approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles). Its design features a laser beam-riding guidance system, which is highly resistant to jamming, ensuring precise targeting against various aerial threats.
This strategic investment reflects Lithuania’s ongoing efforts to bolster its defense infrastructure and enhance its operational capabilities amid regional security challenges.
