Meloni Eyes Nobel Peace Prize for Trump If He Ends Ukraine Conflict

In a recent press conference, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her hopes for a significant shift in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, envisioning a scenario where former US President Donald Trump could be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Meloni’s remarks came following a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, highlighting the cordial relationship she shares with Trump.

Meloni articulated her desire for Trump to play a pivotal role in achieving a “just and lasting peace” in Ukraine, which she believes would warrant a Nobel nomination. “I hope that one day we can award a Nobel Peace Prize to Donald Trump,” she stated, emphasizing her faith in his potential impact on the resolution of the conflict.

This sentiment echoes Trump’s frustrations about not having received the prestigious award during his presidency. Recently, he conveyed to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre that the lack of a Nobel prize had diminished his sense of obligation to focus solely on peace efforts.

In another significant development, Trump introduced a new initiative called the “Board of Peace.” Initially intended to oversee a truce in Gaza and its subsequent recovery, the project has evolved into a broader mechanism aimed at resolving various international conflicts. While Italy has been invited to participate in this board, Meloni noted that constitutional constraints prevent Italy from joining an organization headed by a single foreign leader.

Despite these barriers, Meloni has encouraged Trump to consider restructuring the framework to accommodate Italy’s involvement, stating, “We must try to do this work. The presence of countries like ours can make a difference.”

As the geopolitical landscape continues to shift, Meloni’s statements underscore her commitment to fostering international cooperation while navigating the complexities of both Italian and European constitutional laws.
