DG NCB Anurag Garg Reviews Anti-Drug Measures and De-Addiction Initiatives at Indo–Myanmar Border Town of Moreh

In a focused initiative aimed at combating drug trafficking and narcotics abuse, Anurag Garg, IPS, the Director General of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), visited Moreh, a strategic town on the Indo-Myanmar border. Accompanied by the Deputy Director General of NCB for the North East Region and the Zonal Director of NCB Imphal, Garg’s visit was part of a broader effort to enhance vigilance and enforcement measures in this sensitive area rife with drug-related challenges.

During his visit, Garg undertook an in-depth assessment of current border vigilance and anti-drug trafficking systems. Engaging with local law enforcement, he held discussions with the Superintendent of Police from the Tengnoupal district and the Commanding Officer of the Assam Rifles. These meetings were centered on fostering inter-agency coordination to enhance the efficacy of operations against cross-border drug trafficking networks. Emphasis was placed on crucial aspects such as intelligence sharing, the execution of joint operations, and the maintenance of heightened vigilance along routes commonly exploited by organized drug syndicates.

In addition to supply reduction efforts, Anurag Garg also focused on demand-reduction strategies by visiting a de-addiction center managed by a non-governmental organization in Moreh. His interactions with the staff and patients at the facility highlighted the community’s commitment to addressing addiction. Garg commended the resilience of the individuals striving to overcome their struggles with substance abuse and encouraged them to become advocates for change. By sharing their personal stories, he urged them to raise awareness about the dangers associated with drug abuse and the critical importance of early intervention and rehabilitation.

This visit not only underscored the NCB’s multifaceted strategy in addressing the drug crisis—balancing supply reduction initiatives with robust enforcement and healthcare solutions—but also reaffirmed the Government of India’s commitment to safeguarding border regions from the threats posed by narcotics trafficking. Furthermore, it illustrated a clear intent to support the recovery and reintegration of those affected by drug addiction back into society, reinforcing a holistic approach to the ongoing issue of drug abuse in the region.
