In a significant event at the Faculty of Emerging Military Technologies (FEMT), Lt Gen Neeraj Varshney, Commandant of the Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME) and Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME), addressed the officers graduating from the SO(EME)-145 Course. During his Closing Address, he underscored the profound responsibilities that come with military command, emphasizing the need for professional excellence, ethical conduct, and selfless service in their future careers.
Lt Gen Varshney characterized command not simply as a role of authority, but as a privilege accompanied by an unwavering commitment and accountability. He asserted that the decisions made in command roles have significant and lasting effects on personnel, operational readiness, and the overall reputation of the Indian Army. Thus, qualities such as integrity and sound judgment are essential for every military leader.
The Commandant urged the officers to uphold high standards of financial integrity, moral courage, and professional ethics while carrying out their command duties. He encouraged them to formulate a clear roadmap for their future appointments and to engage in lifelong learning to adapt to the swiftly changing landscape of military technologies and operational challenges.
In his remarks on the complexities of modern military leadership, Lt Gen Varshney advised the officers to develop strong judgment and decisiveness, particularly when faced with challenging situations. He highlighted that true leadership often involves making difficult choices and stressed the importance of adhering to principles, choosing the “harder right over the easy wrong.”
Drawing from the wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita, he implored the graduating officers to perform their duties with humility, integrity, and a sense of selfless devotion to the nation, rather than seeking personal gain. He urged them to wield their authority wisely and responsibly, ensuring their leadership is underpinned by fairness, compassion, and accountability.
Moreover, the senior officer accentuated the necessity of balancing technical excellence with administrative responsibilities, particularly for the Corps of EME, which plays a critical role in the operational effectiveness of the Army’s advanced equipment and weapon systems. He encouraged the officers to adopt a long-term perspective, embrace innovation, and lead by example to instill confidence among their troops.
Stressing that effective leadership transcends technical skills, Lt Gen Varshney reminded the officers that command requires courage, resilience, and a readiness to make tough decisions, rather than seeking mere popularity. He urged them to evolve into leaders who could inspire emulation through professionalism, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to duty in every facet of their assignments.
The ceremony also celebrated academic excellence, with Lt Col Ankur Tyagi receiving the GOC-in-C Army Training Command (ARTRAC) Book Prize for being the Best Student of the SO(EME)-145 Course. This recognition reflected his outstanding performance and dedication throughout the training program.
The SO(EME)-145 Course is designed to equip officers of the Corps of EME for advanced leadership roles in command and staff positions. The curriculum focuses on nurturing technical expertise, leadership skills, and decision-making capabilities to meet the evolving demands of the Indian Army, ensuring that the officers are prepared to lead with integrity, competence, and vision in their future roles.
