In a significant demonstration of India’s strides in military technology, President Droupadi Murmu, serving as the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, performed a historic sortie as co-pilot in the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) โPrachandโ at the Jaisalmer Air Force Station. This event took place ahead of the Indian Air Forceโs Exercise Vayu Shakti, putting a spotlight on the country’s advancements in domestic defence manufacturing.
The sortie, conducted in proximity to the India-Pakistan border, allowed President Murmu to conduct an aerial survey of the firing range, showcasing the operational capabilities of the LCH in challenging terrains. Designed for high-altitude operations and equipped to handle extreme conditions, the LCH Prachand is produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and marks a pivotal achievement in India’s journey toward self-reliance in military technology.
This sortie marks President Murmuโs third engagement with frontline military aircraft. Earlier this year, she took part in a flight aboard a Sukhoi-30 MKI at Tezpur Air Force Station in Assam, followed by a sortie in a Rafale fighter jet at Ambala in October. These experiences reflect her dedication to grasping the operational readiness and capabilities of the armed forces.
During her visit to Rajasthan, which began the previous evening, President Murmu is also set to witness Exercise Vayu Shakti, a comprehensive demonstration of the Indian Air Force’s firepower and precision. Defence officials highlighted that the sortie underscored the LCH’s advanced features, reinforcing its effectiveness in combat operations across diverse environments.
Inducted into service in recent years, the LCH Prachand is specially equipped for anti-infantry and anti-armour missions, bolstering India’s defence posture. This event not only serves to uplift the morale of the armed forces but also underscores the significance of indigenous innovation in advancing national security.
