The Indian Naval Sailing Vessel INSV Kaundinya is set to be ceremonially flagged into Mumbai Harbour on 2 March 2026, a significant milestone marking the successful completion of her maiden overseas voyage to the Sultanate of Oman. This ceremony will be presided over by Sanjay Seth and serves to commemorate the vesselโs historic return passage across the Arabian Sea, highlighting India’s enduring maritime heritage and the longstanding linkages between India and Oman in the Indian Ocean region.
INSV Kaundinya is a remarkable vessel, constructed using traditional stitched shipbuilding techniques that hark back to ancient Indian maritime practices. The ship is made from wooden planks hand-stitched together with coir rope and sealed with natural resins, embodying a revival of centuries-old craftsmanship. The design of the vessel was inspired by depictions found in the 5th century CE Ajanta Caves and built under the supervision of the Indian Navy in collaboration with traditional artisans, showcasing a blend of historical techniques and modern naval engineering validation.
The journey commenced from Porbandar on 29 December 2025, retracing the ancient sea routes that were once navigated by Indian mariners. Upon her arrival at Port Sultan Qaboos in Muscat on 14 January 2026, the vessel received a warm ceremonial welcome, attended by Omani dignitaries and members of the Indian diaspora. During her stay in Oman, INSV Kaundinya was opened to the public, symbolizing Indiaโs rich maritime heritage and serving as a platform for cultural diplomacy.
Named after the legendary mariner Kaundinya, the ship represents India’s deep-rooted tradition of oceanic navigation and its outreach efforts across the Indian Ocean. This expedition highlights the Indian Navyโs multifaceted role, emphasizing its commitment not just as a provider of maritime security, but also as a guardian of the nationโs rich maritime legacy.
The upcoming flag-in ceremony in Mumbai will celebrate the culmination of an important initiative aimed at reviving maritime heritage. It underscores India’s dedication to enhancing maritime outreach, fostering cultural diplomacy, and preserving traditional nautical craftsmanship, reinforcing its position in the maritime arena.
