Defence Current Affairs 28 March 2026

India is actively upgrading its defence preparedness in response to emerging security challenges, particularly the increasing use of drones in modern warfare. Alongside this, the government has approved large-scale defence procurements and initiated strategic naval operations to safeguard critical energy supplies. These developments come at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions across West Asia and beyond.

Revival of Tunguska System for Counter-Drone Warfare

With drones becoming a significant threat on the battlefield, India has decided to modernise its older air defence platforms. The country has placed fresh orders for the Tunguska air defence missile system from Russia, bringing renewed focus to a system originally inducted in the 1990s.

The deal, valued at ₹445 crore, aims to enhance India’s capability to counter low-flying and slow-moving aerial threats such as drones and cruise missiles. Unlike high-end systems like the S-400 air defence system, which are designed for larger and faster targets, the upgraded Tunguska system is specifically tailored for close-range defence.

A key concern in modern warfare is the growing use of low-cost drone swarms. These drones can fly at low altitudes and overwhelm even advanced defence systems. The Tunguska system, equipped with surface-to-air missiles and twin 30 mm guns, provides a layered defensive shield capable of neutralising such threats effectively.

Massive Defence Procurement Boost

India has also approved a series of major defence acquisitions worth over ₹2.38 lakh crore to strengthen its military capabilities. These include investments in unmanned strike aircraft, advanced air defence systems, transport aircraft, and artillery.

The approvals were granted by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. One of the most significant projects involves the procurement of military transport aircraft, which will be manufactured in India with support from foreign partners. This initiative is expected to boost domestic defence manufacturing and encourage private sector participation.

In addition, the Army will receive new systems such as advanced air defence platforms, high-capacity communication networks, and the Dhanush artillery gun system. Around 300 Dhanush guns are expected to be inducted, enhancing the Army’s long-range strike capabilities with improved precision and firepower.

Separate contracts have also been signed for the procurement and maintenance of Tunguska systems in collaboration with Russian defence agencies, further reinforcing bilateral defence ties.

Operation Urja Suraksha: Securing Energy Lifelines

Amid rising tensions in West Asia, the Indian Navy has launched Operation Urja Suraksha to ensure the safety of India’s energy imports. The mission focuses on escorting Indian-flagged vessels carrying essential fuels through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

This narrow waterway is one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, handling a significant portion of global energy supplies. With Iran imposing a blockade, risks to maritime trade have increased sharply.

Under this operation, Indian naval warships are providing escort, navigation support, and layered protection to vessels transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and crude oil. The mission ensures that these shipments safely pass through the Persian Gulf and into the Arabian Sea.

Given that India imports nearly 85% of its crude oil, the uninterrupted flow of energy resources is critical for the nation’s economic stability.

Rising Conflict in West Asia

The regional situation has further intensified due to ongoing hostilities involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. Missile strikes have targeted key locations, including a military base in Saudi Arabia, where several U.S. personnel were reportedly injured.

The conflict has entered a prolonged phase, with continued exchanges of attacks and rising tensions affecting global markets and security dynamics. The situation has also impacted the functioning of the Strait of Hormuz, further complicating global energy supply chains.

Amid these developments, former U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated a temporary delay in escalating military action, allowing time for diplomatic engagement, although uncertainty remains high.

Global Cooperation on Drone Defence

In a parallel development, Ukraine and Saudi Arabia have signed a defence cooperation agreement focused on counter-drone technology. The agreement was finalised in Jeddah under the leadership of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The partnership aims to combine Ukraine’s battlefield experience in drone warfare with Saudi Arabia’s technological capabilities. It includes provisions for technology sharing, joint investments, and future defence collaborations.

This agreement highlights the growing global emphasis on countering drone threats, as nations adapt to the evolving nature of warfare.
