Womaniya Initiative: Empowering Women Entrepreneurs
The Government of India has taken a major step toward strengthening women-led enterprises through the Womaniya Initiative, launched in 2019 on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) platform. This initiative is designed to enable women entrepreneurs and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to directly participate in government procurement.
Under this initiative, women-led Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) can sell products such as handicrafts, handloom items, jute goods, coir products, home décor, and office furnishings. By creating a dedicated digital interface, the initiative simplifies access and removes barriers that often limit women’s participation in formal markets.
GeM, launched in 2016 under the vision of “Minimum Government, Maximum Governance,” provides a transparent, paperless, and cashless procurement system. It allows government departments, public sector units, and local bodies to procure goods and services efficiently from sellers across India.
A complementary program, SWAYATT (Startups, Women & Youth Advantage Through e-Transactions), was introduced in February 2019 to further promote inclusivity. It focuses on enhancing opportunities for startups, women entrepreneurs, youth, and marginalized communities by improving ease of doing business on the platform.
The impact of these initiatives is significant. Over 2.1 lakh women-led MSEs are registered on GeM, collectively securing more than 13.7 lakh orders in FY 2025–26. This reflects growing participation of women in India’s public procurement ecosystem.
Global Trade Reaches Record Levels in 2025
Global trade witnessed remarkable growth in 2025, with total goods exports reaching $26.3 trillion, marking a 7% increase compared to the previous year, according to the World Trade Organization.
Major economies such as China, United States, and Germany continue to dominate global exports, jointly accounting for nearly 29% of total trade. The top ten exporting nations together contribute almost half (49.6%) of global exports, highlighting the intense competition in international markets.

Preeti Saran Re-Elected to UN Committee
India has strengthened its presence in global governance by securing seats in four important bodies under the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in April 2026. These elections were held by consensus, reflecting broad international support.
