World Design Day 2026
World Design Day is celebrated annually on April 27 to recognize the importance of design in everyday life. From digital devices to urban infrastructure, design plays a crucial role in shaping human experiences and improving functionality.
Also known as International Design Day, this occasion promotes creativity, innovation, and the application of design solutions to address real-world challenges. The day commemorates the establishment of the International Council of Design in 1963, highlighting its contribution to advancing the global design community.
World Malaria Day 2026
Observed on April 25 each year, World Malaria Day aims to raise awareness and accelerate efforts to eliminate malaria worldwide. It was initiated by the World Health Organization in 2007, with the first observance held in 2008, replacing the earlier Africa Malaria Day.
The 2026 theme, “Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must.”, emphasizes urgency and collective action. The WHO’s Global Technical Strategy for Malaria (2016–2030) targets a 90% reduction in malaria cases and deaths by 2030.
India has shown significant progress, including a sharp decline in malaria cases between 2015 and 2023, exit from the High Burden to High Impact group in 2024, and over 160 districts reporting zero cases in recent years. However, sustained efforts are still required to completely eliminate the disease.
National Panchayati Raj Day 2026
National Panchayati Raj Day is observed on April 24 across India to strengthen grassroots democracy. The day marks the implementation of the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act, which came into force in 1993 and provided constitutional status to Panchayati Raj Institutions.
The 2026 theme, “Sashakt Panchayat, Sarvangeen Vikas”, highlights the role of empowered local governance in achieving inclusive development.
The Panchayati Raj system follows a three-tier structure:
- Gram Panchayat (village level)
- Panchayat Samiti (block level)
- Zila Parishad (district level)
This system enables decentralized governance and greater public participation in rural development.
India Approves ₹30 Billion Currency Swap for Maldives
India has extended a ₹30 billion currency swap facility to the Maldives under the SAARC framework, reinforcing economic cooperation between the two countries. The facility has been provided through the Reserve Bank of India under the SAARC Currency Swap Framework (2024–2027).
This mechanism allows member countries to access short-term liquidity support during foreign exchange shortages. Introduced in 2012 by South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, the framework is particularly useful for smaller economies facing external pressures.
Notably, this approval came after the Maldives repaid a previous $400 million swap arrangement, reflecting continued financial cooperation and trust.
ISRO’s Nationwide Land Mapping Project
On the occasion of National Panchayati Raj Day, Indian Space Research Organisation announced the completion of a nationwide land use and land cover mapping project.
This initiative provides high-resolution data at a 1:10,000 scale, covering the entire country. It aims to support local governance by enabling better planning, monitoring, and decision-making at the grassroots level.
The project uses geospatial technology and satellite data to classify land into:
- Land Use: Human activities such as agriculture, urbanization, and industry
- Land Cover: Natural features like forests, water bodies, and barren land
This data-driven approach is expected to improve resource management, disaster preparedness, and environmental monitoring.
New Vice-Chairperson of NITI Aayog
The government has restructured NITI Aayog and appointed Ashok Kumar Lahiri as its Vice-Chairperson.
A former Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India and a member of the 15th Finance Commission, Lahiri brings extensive policy experience to the role.
NITI Aayog, established on January 1, 2015, replaced the Planning Commission and serves as the government’s premier policy think tank, with its Vice-Chairperson appointed by the Prime Minister.
India’s Forex Reserves Rise to $703.3 Billion
India’s foreign exchange reserves rose by $2.36 billion to reach $703.31 billion for the week ending April 17, 2026, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India.
The increase reflects strengthening foreign currency assets and improved external stability. Foreign Currency Assets (FCA), the largest component of reserves, saw a significant rise, influenced by global currency movements.
India had earlier achieved a record high of $728.494 billion in February 2026. Although reserves declined temporarily due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia, recent trends indicate recovery and resilience in the country’s external sector.
