In a landmark achievement for gender inclusion in the Indian Armed Forces, Colonel Noreen Shanet John has made history by becoming the first female officer to command an Agniveer training battalion at the Madras Engineering Group & Centre (MEG & Centre) in Bengaluru. The MEG & Centre, renowned as one of India’s oldest military establishments with a legacy stretching back over two centuries, is a pivotal training hub for the Madras Sappers. Its role has now evolved to include the comprehensive training of young recruits under the Agnipath scheme, which aims to introduce short-term service soldiers known as Agniveers.
Colonel John’s commanding role places her at the core of developing these recruits, who are being trained to acquire essential skills in technical fields, battlefield engineering, and overall military readiness. Her leadership will significantly influence the preparedness and capabilities of the Agniveers as they undergo intense training and development.
Colonel John’s journey towards this historic leadership position began in her academic years at Providence Women’s College in Kozhikode, Kerala, where she was recognized as an exceptional cadet in the National Cadet Corps (NCC). Notably, she was awarded second place in the All India Best Cadet Competition during the Republic Day Camp in 1989 and served as the best parade commander in 1993. A highlight of her early leadership experience was commanding the Combined Guard of Honour for then-Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao during the Prime Minister’s Rally.
Her exposure to diverse perspectives was broadened by her participation in the Indo-Canada Youth Exchange Programme in 1993–94, experiences that contributed to her discipline, confidence, and leadership style—traits that have defined her military career.
Commissioned into the Corps of Engineers on March 7, 1998, Colonel John has dedicated over 26 years to the Indian Army, serving in various operational, instructional, and leadership roles. Her career has been characterized by steady advancement based on merit and professional excellence. Among her significant roles was as a Senior Group Testing Officer at the 14 Services Selection Board in Prayagraj, where she played an integral part in evaluating prospective officers for the armed forces.
In January 2020, Colonel John received a Permanent Commission, aligning with the increasing inclusion of female officers in long-term service roles. Her promotion to Colonel (Select Grade) in January 2023 reflects a recognition of her leadership capabilities.
