Cameroon Armed Forces Claim Killing of 14 "Terrorists" in Northwestern Region, NGO Raises Concerns Over Civilian Casualties

The Cameroonian defense ministry has reported that its armed forces killed 14 individuals labeled as “terrorists” in the northwest region of the country, a troubled area that has witnessed nearly a decade of violence stemming from attempts to secede by its anglophone population. This incident occurred in the town of Ndzerem-Nyam on Sunday, with the ministry claiming that soldiers engaged after coming under heavy fire from armed attackers.

According to the defense department’s statement, the military took what it described as an “appropriate and professional response,” and subsequently seized multiple weapons and improvised explosive devices. The government characterized the deceased as “dangerous terrorists,” emphasizing the need for robust military action in the face of ongoing threats.

However, this account has been met with significant backlash. African Conscience, a non-governmental organization, condemned the actions of the military, asserting that the victims included mostly unarmed civilians who were attending a cultural ceremony when the incident unfolded. The NGO contested the claims made by the military, indicating that only a small number of those killed were involved in separatist activities. They have called for an independent investigation into the events leading to the deaths.

Concerns about the ongoing conflict in the region have also been voiced by religious leaders. In April, Pope Leo XIV highlighted a “cycle of destabilization and death” during a visit to the area, indicating the urgent need for peace and resolution.

The roots of the current violence can be traced back to 2016, when peaceful demonstrations by English-speaking citizens, who felt marginalized in a predominantly French-speaking nation, were met with a violent crackdown by President Paul Biya’s government. Since then, the conflict between armed separatists and Cameroonian security forces has intensified, with estimates suggesting that thousands have lost their lives as a result.

The events in Ndzerem-Nyam are just the latest in a series of violent clashes that have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in the northwestern regions of Cameroon. As calls for accountability and transparency grow louder, the international community looks on, anxious for a resolution to a conflict that has caused significant suffering for many innocent civilians.
