Shri Vishvajit Sahay, an eminent figure in the Indian Defence Accounts Service, has taken on the significant role of Secretary (Defence Finance) within the Ministry of Defence, effective May 1, 2026. His extensive career, spanning over three decades, is marked by his dedicated contributions to defence financial management, public administration, and budgeting oversight.
Before assuming his current position, Shri Sahay served as the Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA), a role that underscored his depth of knowledge in managing defence finances. His career is characterized by several prominent positions, including Additional Secretary & Financial Adviser in the Department of Science and Technology, Joint Secretary in the Department of Heavy Industries, and Finance Manager in the Acquisition Wing of the Ministry of Defence. Additionally, he held the post of Director in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, demonstrating his versatile skill set within various governmental departments.
Within the Defence Accounts Department, Shri Sahay gained valuable experience as the Principal Controller of Defence Accounts (Pensions) in Prayagraj, as well as in roles such as Joint CGDA and Special CGDA. These positions have equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of the intricacies involved in defence financial governance.
An alumnus of St Stephen’s College, Shri Sahay is also a law graduate, enriching his academic background with robust analytical skills. His global exposure includes representation of India at prestigious international forums, notably the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom and the George C. Marshall European Centre for Security Studies in Germany.
His new appointment is poised to enhance financial efficiency and transparency within the Ministry of Defence, strengthening strategic decision-making in defence expenditures. Moreover, it is expected to support the modernisation and capability development of the armed forces, reinforcing the critical role he will play in all facets of defence financial governance.
As Secretary (Defence Finance), Shri Sahay will assume a vital role in managing defense budgets and procurement finances. Additionally, he will be responsible for ensuring fiscal discipline across the armed forces and supporting long-term planning to advance India’s defence capabilities. His leadership is anticipated to drive significant improvements in the operational efficiency of defence financial management in the country.
