In a remarkable chapter of the Indian Air Force’s illustrious history, Group Captain Kunal Kalra has distinguished himself with extraordinary valor and leadership. Awarded the Vir Chakra, India’s third-highest wartime gallantry honor, Kalra’s exemplary actions during Operation Sindoor in May 2025 showcased his commitment to duty and exceptional flying skills.
Born and raised in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, Kalra entered the Indian Air Force on June 21, 2008, as part of the 181st Pilots Course. His career trajectory has seen a steady rise, with promotions to Squadron Leader, Wing Commander, and his current rank of Group Captain, reflecting his dedication and skill over nearly two decades of service.

Before Operation Sindoor, the Indian Armed Forces responded to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, with a coordinated military effort aimed at neutralizing terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan. Kalra’s mission involved a daring and unescorted night strike against heavily fortified targets protected by advanced air defense systems.
Flying under treacherous meteorological conditions, Kalra and his formation navigated through severe turbulence and lightning while maintaining strict radio silence. The mission presented multiple emergencies that required immediate and decisive actions from Kalra.
The first crisis arose with the identification of an unserviceable aircraft. A typical response would be to abort the mission; however, Kalra assessed the situation, determined the mission remained viable, and successfully engaged the first target. The second challenge manifested when a critical electronic malfunction threatened the release of weapons while in enemy airspace. Demonstrating exceptional judgment, Kalra resolved the malfunction, neutralized the second target, and dynamically reallocated remaining targets for optimal effect while ensuring the safety of his team.
Even following the successful completion of the mission, his humility shone through when a technician inquiring about the weapons found the response, “Yeh gaye jahaan jaane chahiye the” (“They have gone where they needed to go”), underscoring his focus on mission objectives over personal accolades.
Kalra’s gallant conduct earned him wide recognition. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami publicly applauded his achievements, referring to him as a proud son of Devbhoomi.
