Major Harshit Sharma, a serving officer in the Indian Army, has demanded a thorough, transparent investigation into the mysterious death of his sister, Twisha Sharma. Twisha was found deceased in her marital home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on the night of May 12, 2026.
The tragic incident involves Twisha, a 33-year-old former Miss Pune contestant and MBA graduate, who had been married for about five months to local lawyer Samarth Singh, the son of retired district judge Giribala Singh. Following her death, authorities revealed that she had died from antemortem hanging, with additional injuries noted during the post-mortem examination. Important samples have been preserved for forensic analysis.
In a press conference held in Bhopal, Major Sharma, supported by family and veteran Army officers, raised serious questions about the investigation’s handling. Expressing that the family seeks justice rather than revenge, he highlighted several concerning issues regarding the case.
One of the critical points raised was the alleged delay in police response and the registration of the First Information Report (FIR). According to Major Sharma, the family made the initial call to the police, contradicting the claims of urgency from the in-laws. CCTV footage seemingly shows Twisha’s mother-in-law moving calmly during what the family characterizes as a chaotic situation. The FIR, which includes charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 80(2) related to dowry death, was only registered days later, on May 15 at around 2:30 a.m.
Additionally, Major Sharma accused the Singh family of exerting undue influence, noting that anticipatory bail applications were filed before the FIR was registered, suggesting a premeditated effort to escape accountability. Disturbingly, he revealed that his family had received threats, with his 61-year-old father warned they would be “thrashed by 30 men” for pursuing the investigation.
“Why are we not asking where Samarth Singh is? Why is he absconding?” Major Sharma questioned during the press briefing, emphasizing the need for scrutiny and accountability in the investigation.
The major further elaborated on the alleged harassment Twisha had faced during her short marriage, citing that she was pressured into abandoning her career and was subjected to verbal abuse, including being called “useless” and “a burden.” He noted that there were troubling reports about her emotional distress, including a disturbing conversation the night of her death, where she abruptly disconnected a phone call upon her husband’s entry into the room.
As the investigation unfolds, the local police have taken steps to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the allegations related to dowry harassment and the circumstances surrounding Twisha’s passing. Recently, a sessions court denied anticipatory bail to Samarth Singh, while his mother, Giribala Singh, has secured bail in certain proceedings. Her defense contends that personal and mental health factors played a role in Twisha’s behavior post-pregnancy, claims that the Sharma family has vehemently rejected as an attempt to defame the deceased.
Protests have erupted in Bhopal, with demonstrations led by Twisha’s family, who are seeking intervention from senior law enforcement officials. The Vardi Foundation has also joined the cause, planning a motorcycle rally to demand justice for the sister of the army officer.
