India Tests Systems Against Mythos Cyber Threat

India has started a major cybersecurity exercise to evaluate whether critical digital infrastructure can withstand threats linked to “Mythos,” a next-generation artificial intelligence model reportedly associated with advanced cyber capabilities. The testing programme includes government platforms, banking systems, and digital identity infrastructure such as Aadhaar.

The initiative involves collaboration between leading Indian technology companies, cybersecurity agencies, and financial institutions. Major IT firms like Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services are participating in controlled testing environments. Since direct access to the Mythos model is unavailable, these firms are using Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.7 model to simulate possible cyber risks and vulnerabilities.

India’s national cybersecurity agency, CERT-In, is leading assessments of critical digital systems. The Reserve Bank of India also held discussions with domestic banks in May 2026 regarding possible cyber risks emerging from advanced AI systems.

The tests are focused on identifying weaknesses such as zero-day vulnerabilities, which are unknown software flaws that hackers can exploit before developers release security patches. These vulnerabilities are considered one of the most dangerous categories of cyber threats because they can target operating systems, browsers, and enterprise software without warning.

India’s Aadhaar system, managed by the Unique Identification Authority of India, is also part of the review. Aadhaar is the world’s largest biometric identity programme and stores the digital identity details of over a billion residents.

The growing role of artificial intelligence in cybersecurity has raised concerns worldwide. Agencies such as National Institute of Standards and Technology continue to develop guidelines and standards to strengthen cyber resilience against AI-driven attacks.

India Records 191 Cockroach Species

India has officially recorded 191 species of cockroaches, with more than 60 percent of them found only within the country. The findings were published in the scientific taxonomy journal Zootaxa through a major study conducted by the Zoological Survey of India.

The research also introduced India’s first and largest DNA barcode reference library for cockroaches. Scientists generated more than 100 high-quality DNA barcodes to improve species identification and classification. DNA barcoding is a scientific method that uses a short genetic sequence, commonly from the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I gene, to distinguish between species.

The study identified several undocumented and endemic cockroach lineages, highlighting the country’s rich biodiversity. One notable discovery was Neoloboptera peninsularis from the Deccan Peninsula in March 2026.

Researchers believe some endemic cockroach species may have Gondwanan origins. Gondwana was an ancient supercontinent that once connected present-day India, Africa, South America, Antarctica, Australia, and Madagascar. This suggests that certain Indian cockroach lineages may have evolved from very ancient biological groups.

Cockroaches belong to the order Blattodea, which also includes termites under modern biological classification systems. Despite their negative public image, cockroaches perform important ecological functions. They act as decomposers, help recycle nutrients, and serve as bioindicators that reflect environmental health.

The creation of the DNA barcode library is expected to support future biodiversity conservation, species monitoring, and taxonomic research in India.

Scientists Detect 10-Billion-Year-Old Radio Signal

Astronomers have detected one of the oldest known fast radio bursts ever observed. The signal, named FRB 20240304B, travelled nearly 10 billion years before reaching Earth.

The burst was first detected on 4 March 2024 by the MeerKAT Radio Telescope. Scientists later used the James Webb Space Telescope to identify its host galaxy, which turned out to be a small, low-mass, star-forming dwarf galaxy.

Fast radio bursts, commonly known as FRBs, are brief but extremely powerful pulses of radio waves originating from distant regions of space. Astronomers study FRBs using measurements such as dispersion measure, redshift, and host galaxy localisation. These observations help researchers understand the intergalactic medium, galaxy evolution, and compact cosmic objects.

Scientists found that FRB 20240304B originated when the universe was only about three billion years old, during a phase called “cosmic noon.” This period marked the peak of star formation activity in the universe, occurring around two to three billion years after the Big Bang.

The discovery significantly expanded the known redshift range of localised fast radio bursts, helping scientists study the early universe in greater detail.

One possible source of FRBs is magnetars, which are highly magnetised neutron stars formed after massive stellar explosions. However, the exact origin of many FRBs still remains uncertain.

Astronomers are also using advanced observatories such as LOFAR for deep-space radio observations. In June 2025, LOFAR detected a giant radio mini-halo surrounding the galaxy cluster SpARCS1049, located around 10 billion light-years away.

PM Modi Holds Talks on Indo-Pacific Cooperation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held separate meetings with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi in New Delhi on 26 May 2026.

The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, with special emphasis on maritime security, supply chain resilience, economic connectivity, and strategic partnerships.

The Indo-Pacific refers to the interconnected maritime region stretching across the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. India considers the Indo-Pacific central to its foreign policy strategy for ensuring free trade, secure sea routes, and regional stability.

India and Australia established their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2020. The partnership includes cooperation in defence, trade, education, technology, and critical supply chains. Both countries are members of the Quad grouping alongside Japan and the United States.

Similarly, the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, launched in 2014, covers infrastructure development, digital technology, economic security, and defence cooperation. Japan continues to play a major role in India’s industrial and connectivity projects.

The Quad, first formed in 2007 and revived in 2017, has become an important platform for diplomatic coordination among democratic Indo-Pacific nations.

Maritime security remains a major priority in the region because global trade depends heavily on safe sea lanes and secure ports. Discussions also covered critical minerals, which are essential for batteries, electronics, semiconductors, and renewable energy technologies.

Japan has increasingly focused on diversifying critical mineral supply chains through partnerships with trusted Indo-Pacific countries, including India and Australia.
