The Indian Air Force has introduced a new entry scheme for induction into the Technical Branch (Officer Cadre) through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) scores. This initiative is expected to simplify the recruitment process for engineering graduates who aspire to serve in the Air Force as technical officers.
Indian Air Force Announces Technical Branch Entry Through GATE Scores
Under the new scheme, candidates possessing a valid GATE score will be eligible for direct shortlisting for testing at the Air Force Selection Boards (AFSBs). This means eligible applicants can bypass the preliminary written examination such as the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT). Selection will be conducted strictly on the basis of merit and GATE performance.
The scheme will apply exclusively to the Technical Branch of the Indian Air Force. It aims to attract highly qualified engineering graduates with strong technical backgrounds into the officer cadre. By integrating GATE scores into the recruitment process, the Air Force seeks to improve efficiency and identify technically skilled candidates for advanced defence operations and aerospace technologies.
GATE is a national-level examination conducted to assess the understanding of undergraduate subjects in engineering, technology, science, architecture, and humanities. It is widely used for admissions to postgraduate programmes and recruitment in public sector organizations. The inclusion of GATE scores in Air Force recruitment reflects the growing importance of technical expertise in modern military operations.
The Air Force Selection Board is responsible for evaluating candidates through psychological tests, group activities, interviews, and medical examinations. Candidates shortlisted through GATE scores will directly proceed to these selection stages without appearing for AFCAT.

The move is also expected to increase opportunities for engineering graduates who wish to join the armed forces while reducing the burden of multiple competitive examinations. The Indian Air Force has advised aspirants to follow official recruitment platforms and social media handles of DISHA Indian Air Force for future notifications and updates.
This initiative highlights the Indian Air Force’s focus on strengthening its technological capabilities and attracting skilled professionals for the future of aerospace defence and national security.
