India Discovers Offshore Natural Gas Near Andaman Islands
India has achieved a significant milestone in its energy exploration efforts with the discovery of natural gas at the Sri Vijayapuram-3 well in the Andaman Sea. Situated approximately 15 kilometres off the eastern coast of the Andaman Islands, the discovery highlights the untapped hydrocarbon potential of India’s offshore regions.
The announcement was made by Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, who described the discovery as an important step toward strengthening India’s energy security. The well was drilled at a depth of 355 metres below sea level, demonstrating the advanced technical expertise of Indian offshore exploration teams.
The Andaman basin has long been considered a promising but underexplored region. This latest success is expected to encourage further investments from both public and private sector companies, boosting exploration activities and enhancing India’s domestic natural gas production capabilities.
DRDO Working on Indigenous AI-Based Cyber Defence System
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has launched an ambitious project to develop a homegrown artificial intelligence platform dedicated to cyber defence operations. The initiative aims to strengthen India’s cyber security ecosystem while reducing dependence on foreign AI technologies.
The proposed AI system will operate entirely within secure military networks and will focus on identifying software vulnerabilities, analysing malware, and generating actionable threat intelligence. By keeping all data, model parameters, and operational outputs within defence-controlled infrastructure, the system will ensure greater security and confidentiality.
A key feature of the project is its air-gapped architecture, which prevents any external network access and reduces the risks of cyber intrusions or manipulation. The AI platform is expected to detect a broad range of cyber threats, including authentication flaws, memory corruption vulnerabilities, cryptographic weaknesses, and various forms of cyber attacks.
DRDO plans to develop a large language model with 30 to 70 billion parameters, placing it among the world’s advanced AI systems. The project aligns with the Ministry of Defence’s broader technology-driven reform agenda focused on artificial intelligence and cyber warfare capabilities.
Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit Appointed Next Vice Chief of Air Staff
The Indian Air Force has announced the appointment of Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit as the next Vice Chief of the Air Staff. He will assume office on 1 July 2026, succeeding Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor.
A distinguished fighter pilot and test pilot, Air Marshal Dixit has played a key role in advancing integrated theatre command structures, aimed at enhancing operational coordination among India’s armed forces.
Commissioned into the Indian Air Force in December 1986, he is a graduate of the National Defence Academy, Defence Services Staff College, and National Defence College. Over his career, he has accumulated more than 3,300 flying hours across a wide variety of aircraft, including the Mirage-2000, MiG-21, Jaguar, and Hawk.
His operational experience includes participation in important military operations such as Operation Rakshak and Operation Safed Sagar during the Kargil conflict. His extensive expertise is expected to contribute significantly to the Air Force’s ongoing modernization efforts.
Hazira Emerging as a Major Defence Manufacturing Hub
The Larsen & Toubro Heavy Engineering Complex at Hazira, near Surat, has become a symbol of India’s growing defence manufacturing capabilities. During his recent visit to the facility, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted its importance in advancing the country’s self-reliance goals.
The facility gained prominence through the successful production of the K9 Vajra-T self-propelled artillery system, developed to meet the Indian Army’s operational requirements. These systems have proven particularly effective in high-altitude environments such as Eastern Ladakh.
Hazira is also playing a crucial role in the development of the Zorawar light tank, a joint project between L&T and DRDO designed specifically for mountain warfare. The lightweight platform addresses operational challenges faced in difficult terrain where conventional tanks are less effective.
Another major project under development is the Future Infantry Combat Vehicle (FICV), which is expected to replace the Army’s ageing BMP-2 fleet. Equipped with advanced weaponry and modern battlefield technologies, the FICV represents a major step forward in indigenous defence production.
The success of the Hazira complex demonstrates how India’s defence industrial base is evolving to support national security objectives while contributing to economic growth.
UK Foreign Secretary Strengthens India-UK Strategic Partnership
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper recently concluded her visit to India as part of a broader diplomatic engagement aimed at strengthening Britain’s international partnerships.
During her meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, discussions focused on expanding cooperation under the Vision 2035 framework. Key areas of collaboration included maritime security, critical minerals, resilient supply chains, and economic growth.
A major topic of discussion was the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz and the need to mitigate disruptions affecting global trade and shipping routes. To enhance maritime cooperation, both countries launched the Regional Maritime Security Centre of Excellence (RMSCE) under the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative.
The visit also saw progress in scientific and technological collaboration. India announced support for establishing a satellite observatory campus at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dhanbad in partnership with the University of Cambridge. The project is expected to improve supply chain intelligence and support critical mineral resource management.
The visit reflects the growing depth of India-UK relations and highlights both countries’ commitment to addressing emerging global challenges through strategic cooperation.
