India’s ambitious Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme has reached a pivotal moment, with the Ministry of Defence recently issuing a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the indigenous fifth-generation fighter aircraft project. Defence Ministry sources confirm that the RFP was issued approximately ten days ago and includes a 60-day response period, with submissions anticipated by the end of July. After evaluating the responses, the government will advance to subsequent stages of the selection and development process.

The AMCA is designed as India’s flagship fifth-generation stealth fighter and is being developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency in partnership with the Indian aerospace sector. This aircraft aims to significantly bolster the operational capabilities of the Indian Air Force, featuring stealth characteristics, advanced sensors, network-centric warfare capabilities, and indigenous weapon systems.

In a related advancement, negotiations for the procurement of GE-414 engines for the AMCA prototype phase are reportedly making good progress. Officials indicate that technical negotiations have been completed, and focus has now shifted to commercial discussions. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is spearheading these negotiations on behalf of the programme. The GE-414 engine will power the initial AMCA prototypes and early production variants, fulfilling the performance needs required for the aircraft’s sophisticated operational requirements.

Sources within the Defence Ministry emphasize that accelerating the AMCA programme is a top priority, viewing it as a crucial step towards achieving an indigenous fifth-generation combat aircraft capability. The AMCA is expected to close the technological gap between current-generation fighters and the demands of future air combat. Once deployed, it is set to offer advanced stealth, supercruise capability, enhanced survivability, and multi-role combat performance tailored for prospective battlefield scenarios.

This initiative also plays a vital role in reinforcing India’s defense manufacturing capabilities under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, encouraging significant contributions from both public and private sector aerospace entities.

The advancements in the AMCA programme come at a time when global powers are heavily investing in next-generation combat aircraft. Defence planners view the indigenous fighter as an essential element of India’s long-term air power strategy and a crucial move toward reducing reliance on foreign combat platforms.

With the RFP process underway and engine negotiations nearing conclusion, the AMCA programme is positioned to progress to the next development stage, bringing India closer to its first home-grown fifth-generation fighter aircraft.
