The report highlighted that approximately 14.7 million displaced individuals returned home during 2025. This included 4.4 million refugees and 10.3 million internally displaced persons, with major returns occurring in Afghanistan, Sudan, and Syria. Despite these positive developments, many returnees faced challenges such as insecurity and limited access to basic services.
However, new displacement continued to occur. Around 32.3 million people were newly displaced within their countries during 2025, with the highest numbers reported in Iran and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Established in 1949 by the United Nations General Assembly, UNRWA provides essential services such as education, healthcare, relief assistance, and social support to Palestinian refugees residing in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip.
India’s latest contribution will support UNRWA’s core programmes and welfare activities. The country has consistently extended humanitarian support to Palestine and reaffirmed its long-standing backing for a peaceful two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Apart from financial assistance, India supplied nearly 135 metric tonnes of humanitarian aid to Palestine between October 2023 and November 2024. India has also emerged as a significant supporter of UNRWA, contributing around $35 million for its programmes up to 2023–24.

Saudi Arabia Ends Five-Year Ban on Lebanese Imports
Saudi Arabia has lifted its five-year restriction on imports from Lebanon, reopening trade opportunities for Lebanese exporters. The ban, initially imposed in April 2021 on fruits and vegetables, was later expanded to include all Lebanese products due to concerns about drug smuggling.
Saudi authorities had cited repeated attempts to transport narcotics, including the synthetic stimulant Captagon, through commercial shipments originating from Lebanon. The restrictions remained in place until June 2026.
The decision to resume imports came following diplomatic engagement between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Lebanese leadership, including President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. Saudi Arabia acknowledged Lebanon’s efforts to strengthen state institutions and improve measures against drug trafficking.
The move is expected to benefit Lebanon’s agricultural sector significantly, as Gulf countries represent important export destinations for Lebanese produce.

- The restrictions were originally imposed over drug-smuggling concerns.
- Captagon trafficking played a major role in the decision.

India Validates Indigenous HPV Test for Cervical Cancer Screening
India has achieved a major milestone in healthcare innovation with the successful validation of Truenat HR-HPV-Plus, an indigenous diagnostic test for detecting high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infections linked to cervical cancer.

Andaman Islands Set Guinness World Record for Underwater Human Tower
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have entered the Guinness World Records by creating the world’s tallest human stack underwater. The achievement was recorded on 3 May 2026 at the Lighthouse dive site on Swaraj Dweep, formerly known as Havelock Island.
The record-setting formation consisted of 14 scuba divers who created an underwater tower reaching a height of 22.3 metres. The structure remained stable for three minutes, successfully meeting Guinness World Records’ requirements.
The achievement was verified on-site by Guinness adjudicator Rishi Nath, who presented official certificates to the administration. Lieutenant Governor D.K. Joshi participated in the record attempt alongside other divers.
Remarkably, this was the second Guinness World Record secured by the Union Territory within two days. A day earlier, the islands had achieved another record for unfurling the largest national flag underwater.
