In a somber event on Saturday morning, five members of the Indian Air Force (IAF) tragically lost their lives when an Antonov An-32 transport aircraft crashed during its landing approach at the Air Force Station in Jorhat, Assam. The IAF confirmed the fatalities and announced that a Court of Inquiry has been established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The aircraft was conducting a routine sortie when it crashed within the confines of the airbase at Rowriah airfield, resulting in substantial damage and a subsequent fire. Emergency response teams, including specialized firefighting units, were quickly mobilized to the scene. Senior IAF officials were also dispatched to oversee the rescue operations. The fire was swiftly contained, and initial measures for crash site management commenced immediately.
The personnel identified as having made the ultimate sacrifice include Squadron Leader Prashant Singh, Flight Lieutenant Shubham Kumar, Sergeant Jitendra Sharma, Agniveervayu Khemaram Kumawat, and Agniveervayu Danish Alam. In an official communication, the IAF expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended solidarity with the grieving families, stating, “The Indian Air Force deeply regrets the loss of five personnel in the An-32 accident at Jorhat, Assam.”
While the IAF confirmed the incident, they emphasized that thorough initial inquiries and investigations are actively underway, with the newly constituted Court of Inquiry set to evaluate all pertinent factors surrounding the crash.
The Antonov An-32, a twin-engine turboprop transport aircraft, has been an essential asset of the IAF for many years. Engineered for challenging operations in high-altitude airfields and tropical climates, the aircraft is frequently utilized for tactical airlift, cargo transport, troop movements, supply drops, and paratrooping missions. The IAF operates a significant fleet of these robust aircraft, which play a vital role in logistics support across India’s northeastern region.

This incident has occurred just months after another aviation tragedy in the same region, where a Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet crashed in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district in March, resulting in the loss of two pilots. The IAF has pledged a comprehensive inquiry, aiming to scrutinize every aspect of the incident, including flight parameters, maintenance history, weather conditions, and procedural protocols, to ascertain the exact cause of the aircraft’s crash and to propose any necessary future measures.
