Fake Army Vehicle Busted in Manipur With 15.35 Kg Opium 3

In a significant anti-narcotics operation, joint security forces in Senapati district, Manipur, successfully intercepted a Toyota Innova vehicle adorned with fake Indian Army insignia and seized 15.35 kilograms of suspected opium concealed in a specially fabricated compartment. The driver, identified as 45-year-old Tarkeshwar Singh from Tinsukia district in Assam, was apprehended at the scene.

The operation unfolded around 9:00 a.m. during routine checks at the T. Khullen check-post, led by a collaborative team that included the Special Operations Team (SOT) of Senapati Police, D-78 CRPF, B-109 Quick Action Team (QAT) CRPF, and 16 Assam Rifles. This operation was conducted under the supervision of Senapati Superintendent of Police Zaib Shaikh, IPS, and included an Executive Magistrate’s presence during the arrest.

The vehicle, which bore an Assam registration number, was notably traveling without any escort or official accompaniment, despite prominently displaying military identifiers. Security forces noticed that the vehicle was equipped with a VIP flag post and insignia mimicking that of an Army Brigadier, including a one-star plate. A reversible nameplate found inside the vehicle had “ARMY” on one side and “MINISTRY OF DEFENCE” on the other, raising suspicions among the personnel.

Upon preliminary verification, it was confirmed that neither the vehicle nor Tarkeshwar Singh had any genuine ties to the Indian Army. The military-style markings appeared to be a calculated move to create an impression of official status in order to evade checks.

During a thorough search of the vehicle, officers uncovered 17 packets of suspected opium, which, along with the packaging, weighed approximately 15.35 kg. In addition to the narcotics, two mobile phones, a black wallet containing ₹5,000 in cash, a PAN card, a Voter Identity Card, and the fraudulent nameplate were also seized.

Following the seizure, a case was registered at the Senapati Police Station under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Authorities are currently conducting further investigations to determine the source and intended destination of the contraband, as well as to uncover any broader smuggling network possibly involved.

This incident is reflective of ongoing challenges in Manipur’s Senapati district, an area that has recently experienced a surge in drug-related activities. The region’s proximity to international borders significantly contributes to the narcotics trafficking issues. The use of fake military insignia not only seeks to exploit the authority associated with the armed forces but also poses a significant threat to security protocols, potentially damaging the reputation of the Indian Army.

Security forces in the region are maintaining heightened vigilance through joint operations with state police and central paramilitary units. This latest seizure underscores the effectiveness of coordinated checks in disrupting smuggling attempts, even in the face of deceptive tactics employed by individuals engaged in such activities.

The arrested individual remains in custody as inquiries continue, and authorities have not dismissed the potential for further arrests linked to the supply chain of the seized contraband.
