Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth Appointed as the Next Chief of the Army Staff

The Government of India has appointed Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth as the next Chief of the Army Staff (COAS). He will assume office on June 30, 2026, following the retirement of General Upendra Dwivedi on the same day.

Lieutenant General Seth is a highly decorated officer and a recipient of the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Uttam Yudh Seva Medal (UYSM), and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM). An alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, he was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986.

Throughout his distinguished military career, he has held several important command and staff appointments. His leadership experience includes commanding an Armoured Regiment in the desert sector, an Armoured Brigade in the western theatre, and a Counter-Insurgency Force in Jammu and Kashmir. As a Lieutenant General, he commanded the prestigious Sudarshan Chakra Corps, one of the Indian Army’s major strike formations. He also served as the General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area, where he was responsible for overseeing key military and ceremonial activities.

His appointment reflects the Indian Army’s emphasis on operational experience, strategic leadership, and modernization.

First Batch of NDA-Trained Women Cadets Commissioned

A historic milestone has been achieved in India’s defence sector with the commissioning of the first batch of women cadets trained at the National Defence Academy (NDA). This development marks a significant step toward gender inclusion and equal opportunities in the Armed Forces.

The batch consisted of 17 women cadets who joined the NDA in August 2022 as part of the 148th Course. After completing rigorous military training at their respective service academies, they were commissioned into the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Nine women officers joined the Indian Army through the Passing Out Parade of the 158th Regular Course at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. The event was reviewed by President Droupadi Murmu. Five officers were commissioned into the Indian Air Force during the Combined Graduation Parade held at the Air Force Academy in Dundigal, Hyderabad, reviewed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Three officers joined the Indian Navy through the Passing Out Parade at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala.

This achievement highlights India’s commitment to enhancing women’s participation in military leadership and operational roles.

India–France Innovation Roadmap 2030

India and France have unveiled the Innovation Roadmap 2030, a comprehensive framework designed to deepen cooperation in emerging technologies, research, innovation, and education. The initiative follows the elevation of bilateral relations to a “Special Global Strategic Partnership” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The roadmap recognizes innovation as a key driver of economic growth, technological self-reliance, strategic autonomy, and sustainable development. It builds upon the Horizon 2047 vision shared by both nations and aims to address global challenges through collaborative innovation.

Major Areas of Cooperation

Artificial Intelligence

India and France will strengthen collaboration in AI research, development, governance, and ethical deployment. A dedicated working group will be established to promote trustworthy and secure AI systems while encouraging talent development and computing infrastructure.

Startup Ecosystem

Both countries aim to connect startups, investors, incubators, and venture capital networks. The Bharat Innovates 2026 initiative in Nice served as a platform for Indian deep-tech startups to engage with global investors and innovation leaders.

Space and Advanced Technologies

The roadmap promotes joint efforts in satellite technology, semiconductors, aerospace, advanced computing, and other strategic sectors. These initiatives are expected to enhance technological competitiveness and industrial capabilities.

Education and Research

Academic institutions and research organizations from both countries will expand cooperation through student exchanges, joint research projects, and institutional partnerships. France has also announced its goal of hosting 30,000 Indian students by 2030.

The roadmap is expected to boost innovation-led growth, support entrepreneurship, strengthen technological partnerships, and reinforce the long-term strategic relationship between India and France.

INS Sharda Completes Successful Visit to Colombo

Indian Naval Ship Sharda successfully concluded its port visit to Colombo, Sri Lanka, on June 13, 2026. The visit further strengthened maritime cooperation and defence ties between India and Sri Lanka.

During its stay, the ship participated in professional interactions, training activities, sports competitions, and cross-deck visits with the Sri Lankan Navy. These engagements enhanced interoperability and fostered stronger bonds between naval personnel of both nations.

The Commanding Officer of INS Sharda also met the Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha. The visit reinforced the shared commitment of India and Sri Lanka to maritime security and regional cooperation under the MAHASAGAR vision—Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.

LCH Prachand Successfully Demonstrates HELINA Missile

India’s indigenous Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand has achieved another significant milestone with the successful demonstration of the HELINA anti-tank guided missile (ATGM).

The achievement forms part of a broader modernization program aimed at integrating advanced weapons and electronic warfare capabilities into the helicopter platform. The indigenous electronic warfare suite under development will include a Radar Warning Receiver, Laser Warning Receiver, and Missile Approach Warning System, enhancing survivability in combat operations.

The HELINA missile is a fire-and-forget precision weapon capable of engaging heavily armoured targets with high accuracy. Validation trials are progressing successfully and will significantly enhance the combat effectiveness of the Prachand helicopter, particularly in high-altitude and challenging operational environments.

The successful demonstration highlights India’s growing expertise in indigenous defence technology and its commitment to achieving self-reliance in advanced military systems.
