Sweden Receives First Modernized Stridsvagn 123A Main Battle Tank from KNDS

Sweden has taken a significant step in modernizing its armored capabilities with the delivery of the first Stridsvagn 123A main battle tank, based on the widely recognized Leopard 2 platform, from KNDS. This delivery marks a milestone in Sweden’s ongoing efforts to enhance its military fleet.

The Swedish Army plans to commence training for its first soldiers on this advanced platform in autumn of this year. This development aligns with the contracts that were originally signed in 2024 and later expanded in 2025, which mandate KNDS Deutschland to upgrade all 110 Leopard 2 tanks currently in service with the Swedish military to the Stridsvagn 123A standard.

Florian Hohenwarter, CEO of KNDS Deutschland, emphasized Sweden’s longstanding commitment to the development of the Leopard 2, stating, “Sweden has made a significant contribution to the Stridsvagn 123 A main battle tank system and has been driving the development of the LEOPARD 2 for almost 30 years.” He further highlighted the modernity and interoperability of the Stridsvagn 123A, indicating its compatibility with all Leopard 2 systems.

The initial tank delivery is part of the REMO (Renovation Modernization) program, aimed at significantly enhancing the operational capabilities of Sweden’s Leopard 2 tanks. This program not only focuses on improving combat readiness but also includes upgrades for protection, digital capabilities, and logistics support.

A notable upgrade under this initiative is the integration of Rheinmetall’s L55 A1 120mm smoothbore gun, which is expected to enhance range and firepower, crucial factors for modern warfare. The comprehensive modernization program is anticipated to be completed by 2030, ensuring that Sweden’s armored capabilities remain competitive and effective.

In addition to upgrading its existing fleet, Sweden also recently commissioned KNDS to provide an additional 44 newly-built tanks in the Leopard 2 A8 configuration, which will be designated as Stridsvagn 123B. These new vehicles are set for delivery between 2027 and 2028, contributing to an expected operational strength of 154 Swedish Leopard 2 tanks, given all planned deliveries are fulfilled.
