This strategic command is critical for safeguarding India’s western frontiers and is headquartered in Jaipur. Lt Gen Malhotra is set to take command on July 1, 2026, succeeding Lt Gen Manjinder Singh, who will retire at the end of June.

Commissioned into the Indian Army on June 10, 1989, Lt Gen Malhotra hails from the 47 Armoured Regiment. His impressive academic background includes training at the National Defence Academy (NDA), the Indian Military Academy (IMA), and advanced studies at the prestigious Advanced Command and Staff Course in the UK.

Currently, he serves as the Chief of Staff of the Eastern Command, following a significant tenure in which he commanded the strategically vital XII Corps from June 2023 to June 2025. His previous commands include the elite 1 Armoured Division (known as Airawat Division) and an Independent Armoured Brigade, alongside his leadership of the 47 Armoured Regiment.

Lt Gen Malhotra’s extensive operational experience extends to various staff appointments. He has served in an infantry brigade, within a strike corps, and at an operational command. Notably, he held the position of Additional Director General of Strategic Communication at Army Headquarters, significantly contributing to the Army’s strategic communication frameworks.

His extensive military career has earned him high accolades, including the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and the Sena Medal (SM), awarded for distinguished and exceptional service. Moreover, he received commendations from the Chief of Army Staff and the Army Commander, along with various campaign, service, and long-service medals.

Lt Gen Malhotra’s appointment reflects the Indian Army’s routine rotation of senior leadership and brings considerable operational expertise as he steps into this critical role.
