Lockheed Martin Secures $2.9 Billion Contract for Sentinel A4 Radars for US Army

Lockheed Martin has announced a significant advancement in its military contracts, securing a $2.9 billion deal with the US Army for the production of Sentinel A4 radars. This contract encompasses the manufacturing and associated engineering tasks necessary for the development of these advanced radar systems.

The production efforts will take place at multiple locations, although the specific sites will be confirmed once orders are placed. The initiative is expected to continue through June 2031, indicating a long-term partnership between Lockheed Martin and the US Army. Oversight of the contract will be managed by the Army Contracting Command at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.

The Sentinel A4 radar system is notable for its use of digital processing and solid-state antenna modules, which utilize gallium nitride transmitters. This advanced technology builds on the legacy of Raytheon’s AN/MPQ-6A3 electronically steered 3D radar, known for its ability to provide precise early warning and target-tracking information for short-range air defense systems.

One of the key features of the Sentinel A4 is its enhanced operational capability compared to its predecessor. The system can function effectively in both fixed and mobile configurations, leveraging its design to operate in signal-denied environmentsโ€”a crucial advantage for modern battlefield conditions. In addition to monitoring conventional threats such as manned and unmanned aircraft, the radar can detect rockets, artillery, and mortar systems from extended ranges, facilitating the identification of their origin and impact points.

Lockheed Martin was initially awarded the first development contract for the Sentinel A4 in 2019, with the low-rate initial production units anticipated to be delivered in 2026. The Sentinel A4 has been classified as the US Army’s Program of Record solution, poised to meet evolving Air and Missile Defense requirements for the next four decades.

The company emphasizes that the Sentinel A4 is built with an open architecture, allowing it to adapt effectively to challenging operational environments. This adaptability plays a vital role in safeguarding soldiers and ensuring the uninterrupted execution of missions in complex scenarios.
