International Day of Cooperatives 2026
The International Day of Cooperatives was observed across the world on 4 July 2026 to recognize the significant role that cooperative organizations play in promoting inclusive and sustainable development. The United Nations announced the 2026 theme as “Cooperatives for a Peaceful World!”, highlighting the contribution of cooperatives in building peaceful, resilient, and equitable societies.
The observance aims to increase public awareness about how cooperatives improve livelihoods, create employment opportunities, strengthen local economies, and encourage social inclusion. Cooperatives operate on principles such as democratic participation, equality, and mutual support, making them an important pillar of sustainable development.
The global cooperative movement has celebrated this occasion every year since 1923. In 1995, the celebration gained international recognition when the United Nations began jointly observing the day to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA). Since then, the event has served as a platform to showcase the achievements of cooperative institutions across the world.
Sunil Bharti Mittal Receives 2026 USISPF Leadership Award
Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, has been honoured with the 2026 Leadership Award by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF). The prestigious recognition acknowledges his outstanding contribution to strengthening economic and business relations between India and North America.
The award was presented during the 9th USISPF Annual Leadership Summit held in Washington, D.C. It recognizes Mittal’s leadership in transforming India’s telecommunications sector and expanding the country’s global business presence.
The US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing strategic, economic, and commercial cooperation between India and the United States. Through partnerships between governments and industries, the organization works to deepen bilateral trade, investment, and technological collaboration.
International Booker Prize to be Renamed from 2027
Beginning in 2027, the International Booker Prize will officially be renamed the Bukhman International Booker Prize following a long-term funding agreement with Bukhman Philanthropies.
Along with the new title, the prize money will increase substantially from 2027 onwards. The winning author and translator will receive a total award of £100,000 (approximately ₹1.28 crore), making it one of the world’s most valuable literary awards for translated fiction.
To qualify for the 2027 edition, books must satisfy the following conditions:
- They must be either novels or short-story collections.
- They must be translated into English.
- They must be published in the United Kingdom or Ireland between 1 May 2026 and 30 April 2027.
The International Booker Prize continues to promote outstanding works of international literature while recognizing the essential role of translators in bringing global stories to English-speaking readers.
Gujarat Establishes Semiconductor Training Hub at IIT Gandhinagar
To strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem, Project SAMARTH (Silicon and Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Research and Training Hub) is being developed at IIT Gandhinagar with a total investment of ₹190 crore. Construction of the facility began on 2 March 2026.
The project is a collaborative initiative of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Gujarat, and IIT Gandhinagar.
The primary objective of the centre is to build a highly skilled workforce for India’s growing semiconductor industry. It will provide practical training to technicians, operators, engineers, and researchers while promoting indigenous research, advanced manufacturing processes, and the development of semiconductor technologies.
A major focus of the project is to make engineering graduates fab-ready by providing hands-on experience with semiconductor manufacturing systems.
Over the next five years, the SAMARTH centre plans to train nearly 10,000 individuals, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students, technicians, and participants in short-term certification programmes. IIT Gandhinagar is also expected to collaborate with engineering colleges across Gujarat through Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to expand skill development opportunities at affordable costs.
In addition, L&T Semiconductor Technologies, which partnered with IIT Gandhinagar in August 2024, will contribute to research, training, and capacity-building activities under the initiative.
India Signs Its First Global Green Methanol Supply Agreement
India has achieved an important milestone in the green energy sector with the signing of its first long-term international Green Methanol Supply Agreement.
On 3 July 2026, ACME Green Molecules, a part of the ACME Group, entered into a binding Purchase and Sale Agreement with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company of Japan. The agreement provides for the annual supply of 100,000 tonnes of green methanol, with an estimated contract value of approximately USD 1 billion.
Green methanol is an environmentally friendly fuel produced using renewable energy sources and sustainable feedstocks. Unlike conventional methanol, its manufacturing process significantly lowers greenhouse gas emissions, making it an important fuel for industries and the maritime sector.
The supplied methanol will comply with the Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) standards established by the European Union. It is also expected to meet future International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations aimed at reducing carbon emissions from global shipping.
Production will take place at ACME’s green methanol facility in Paradip, Odisha, representing the company’s third major investment in the state. The agreement strengthens India’s position in the global clean fuel market and supports the country’s ambition to become a leading exporter of sustainable energy products.
