Yemen’s ongoing conflict has seen a recent escalation, as Iran-backed Houthi rebels launched an attack that resulted in the deaths of 14 troops south of the port city of Hodeidah. According to a military official aligned with Yemen’s internationally-recognized government, the clashes took place in the Hays district during the early hours of Saturday morning.
The pro-government forces managed to repel the attack, engaging in prolonged fighting that lasted several hours. The official confirmed that the confrontation led to casualties among the Houthi ranks, although specific figures regarding their losses were not disclosed.
Since the onset of the war in 2015, the Houthis and the Yemeni government have been locked in a brutal conflict that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and precipitated a severe humanitarian crisis throughout Yemen. The Houthis have maintained control over the capital, Sanaa, and significant portions of northern Yemen, including the strategic port city of Hodeidah along the western Red Sea coast. Meanwhile, the internationally-recognized government has retained a foothold in much of the southern region.
Following a UN-negotiated truce implemented in 2022, fighting between the conflicting parties had largely subsided. However, the situation has taken a turn as the Houthis issued threats against Saudi Arabia, a vital supporter of the Aden-based government. On Friday, the rebel group asserted that the kingdom was attempting to obstruct an Iranian aircraft from landing, raising tensions and signaling potential for further conflict in the region.
