Mistral 3 Missile Integrated into French Tigre Mk2 Helicopter for Enhanced Drone Engagement

MBDA has achieved a significant milestone with the successful integration of its Mistral 3 air-to-air missile into the French Armed Forces’ Tigre Mk2 helicopter. This development enhances the helicopter’s capabilities, particularly in engaging drone threats amid evolving combat scenarios.

The integration process built on the existing Mistral 2 firing system of the helicopter, which underwent a series of software and technical upgrades. These enhancements allow the Tigre Mk2 to not only carry but also fire the advanced Mistral 3 missile. This newer variant boasts an imaging infrared seeker, improved resistance to decoys, and an operational range that extends up to 5 miles (8 kilometers), making it a formidable asset in air defense.

The successful integration and subsequent live-fire demonstration were orchestrated by MBDA in close collaboration with the French defense procurement agency (DGA) and the French Armed Forces. This achievement was notable for being completed under tight time constraints, showcasing efficient teamwork and dedication among the involved parties.

The Mistral missile itself is a fire-and-forget system measuring 1.88 meters (6 feet 2 inches) in length and equipped with a 3-kilogram (6.6 pounds) warhead. It reaches speeds of 930 meters per second (2,080 miles per hour) and is designed to intercept a variety of low-flying aircraft. The missile boasts an interception range between 500 meters (1,640 feet) and 8,000 meters (26,246 feet) at altitudes of up to 6,000 meters (19,685 feet). Beyond aerial targets, the Mistral missile can also be deployed from various ground and naval platforms, broadening its operational scope.

The Tigre Mk2 helicopter itself is a advanced twin-engine reconnaissance and attack platform manufactured by Airbus Helicopters. This modernized variant features enhanced capabilities including a jam-resistant GPS system, IFF mode 5 for better interoperability, and increased ballistic protection relative to its predecessors. Its diverse weapons suite comprises a 30 mm Nexter (GIAT) M781 cannon, Hellfire missiles, Mistral missiles, and 68mm rockets, underscoring the helicopter’s versatility in various combat situations.

This integration of the Mistral 3 missile into the Tigre Mk2 marks a significant advancement in the French military’s aerial capabilities, particularly in countering emerging drone threats on the modern battlefield.
