Indian Railways Becomes World’s Second-Most Electrified Railway Network

Why in News?

Indian Railways has achieved 99.6% electrification of its broad-gauge railway network as of 22 July 2026, making it the second-most electrified large railway network in the world, behind Switzerland.

  • Railway electrification uses electric traction through overhead equipment and other power systems.
  • Between 2014 and 2026, Indian Railways electrified 48,072 route kilometres.
  • Before 2014, only 21,801 route kilometres had been electrified over six decades.
