Romania took decisive action on Friday by downing a drone in its airspace, marking a significant event as it is the first instance of such an action since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The president of Romania announced that the drone was intercepted approximately 114 kilometers (70 miles) from the capital city, Bucharest.
Since the onset of the war in Ukraine, Romania has experienced multiple drone incursions, including incidents where drones crashed on its territory. However, this latest incident represents the first case where Romanian forces have actively engaged a drone.
According to the defense ministry, the drone was targeted near the village of Padina. President Nicusor Dan confirmed during a press conference that a Romanian pilot operating an F-16 fighter jet shot down the drone around 11:00 am local time. He emphasized that the area was uninhabited, which allowed for a safe engagement without endangering civilians. Investigative teams from various institutions have been mobilized to analyze the incident and provide detailed reports.
The events leading up to the drone’s demise began at 09:39 am when surveillance systems identified an aerial target. In response, two Eurofighter Typhoon jets from the Italian Air Force and two F-16s from the Romanian Air Force were dispatched to monitor the situation. The Romanian F-16 ultimately engaged the target at 11:02 am, successfully neutralizing the threat.
Romania has recorded numerous drone incursions since the conflict began in Ukraine, with a notable incident earlier this year when a drone collided with an apartment building in May, injuring two individuals. This incident prompted strong condemnation from NATO and the European Union, with both entities attributing the responsibility to Russia and warning against further incursions.
Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu acknowledged the incident as a result of a dedicated pilot’s efforts, the swift response of the Romanian Armed Forces, and effective coordination with the Italian Eurofighters who were on NATO air policing duty. Toiu also reaffirmed Romania’s commitment to enhance its air defense systems and invest in modern anti-drone capabilities, stating the importance of national security.
In light of these escalating incidents, the Romanian parliament adopted a law in 2025 permitting the use of force against drones breaching its airspace. Following the May incursion, the government pledged to strengthen Romania’s air defenses and expedite the acquisition of advanced anti-drone technologies, signaling a proactive stance in safeguarding its national airspace.
