The U.S. Army has made significant strides in enhancing battlefield logistics by selecting five firms to create prototypes for medium-sized autonomous robotic platforms. This initiative is part of a new program aimed at automating tactical logistics, which is essential for supporting military operations in challenging environments.
The companies chosen for this project are AM General, American Rheinmetall, Carnegie Robotics, HDT Robotics, and Stratom. Together, they will work on prototypes designed under Project Sustainment, which is driven by the Army’s Capability Program Executive Office for Mission Autonomy. The primary objective is to minimize the need for soldiers to traverse high-risk resupply routes while providing continuous logistics support around the clock, especially in contested areas.
Field testing of these new capabilities is expected to commence with operational units in early 2027, marking a significant step toward integrating autonomous systems into military logistics.
This initiative builds on previous experiences from the Medium Multipurpose Equipment Transport (M-MET) program, which evolved from the Small Multipurpose Equipment Transport (S-MET) robotic mule. The S-MET was designed to follow dismounted squads, carrying heavy loads to alleviate the physical strain on soldiers while enhancing mobility. It is capable of being outfitted with various mission modules, including those for casualty evacuation, sensors, engineering tools, or remote weapon stations.
The M-MET program was created to bridge the operational gap between the squad-level S-MET and larger autonomous logistics vehicles that are now envisioned under Project Sustainment. Citing Shatiel Edwards, the Vice President of Future Programs at AM General, it has been reported that the M-MET program was absorbed into the broader Project Sustainment initiative.
Among the firms selected, BLADE (formerly HDT Robotics) has proposed the Dire WOLF platform, a robust six-wheeled diesel-electric hybrid derived from its WOLF-X robotic combat vehicle. This platform is engineered for extreme environmental conditions and boasts the capability to transport thousands of pounds of cargo. It utilizes pivot steering and non-pneumatic Michelin Tweels to navigate challenging terrains, including steep slopes and wide gaps.
Furthermore, the onboard battery pack of the Dire WOLF offers exportable power for operations at the front lines. Tom Van Doren, the President of Robotics at BLADE, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with the Army, stating, “The Dire WOLF joins the Hunter WOLF and WOLF-X pack to directly reduce risk to the warfighter. By leveraging advanced autonomy and proven UGV performance, we are ensuring that essential supplies reach soldiers at the tactical edge – safely and reliably.”
